Job-Specific Responsibilities

Our group in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for an innovative and enthusiastic data scientist to join a multidisciplinary research laboratory. We are interested in understanding how computations arise from the organization and connectivity of neuronal networks. To analyze neural circuit structure and function at the highest resolution and completeness possible, we combine structural and functional imaging techniques including high-throughput electron and X-ray microscopy, and in vivo two-photon calcium imaging. We seek a data scientist with programming and machine learning skills. They should be capable of handling and analyzing big data and developing and working with artificial neural networks.

Main projects include:
  • development and application of machine learning approaches for image segmentation and analyses;
  • development and support of data analysis pipelines;
  • data cleaning, processing, and analysis;
  • development and support of large data storage and computing infrastructure;

Success will require a close working collaboration with biologists and the ability to develop coordinated solutions to address biological questions. Building and optimizing novel data analysis pipelines will play a vital role in helping us to better understand the brain.

Typical duties of the Functional Connectomics Data Scientist include:
  • Developing data analysis pipelines to generate, process, and analyze large-scale image datasets;
  • Some manual annotation and data labeling;
  • Documenting and supporting users with data analysis pipelines;
  • Computational systems oversight and miscellaneous programming;
  • Communicating with collaborators and service providers;
  • Documenting projects and communicating project progress.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering, life or physical sciences or a related discipline. 2 years of related experience in research or related environment. Advanced degree may count toward experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are especially interested in candidates with:
  • an advanced degree in science or engineering
  • highly proficient in Python - programming experience in other languages (e.g., C, Java, MATLAB)
  • work experience in biomedical research and/or an academic science environment
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, creative, and enjoy working in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment. S/he will be skilled at translating research problems into user-friendly data analysis pipelines; s/he will have software and data science skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and enthusiasm for collaborating closely with biologists. Demonstrated experience in machine learning a plus. Proficiency in at least one programming language including, but not limited to, Python.

Additional Information

This is a 12-month term position with benefits and the possibility of extension.

This Staff role may start as a remote position due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while restrictions are still in place. The current remote nature of this role is considered temporary and may change as the University continues to evaluate options. While we continue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 guidelines, local on-campus work may be expected for some roles. Harvard Medical School does support flexible schedules, subject to individual departments’ business needs.
