Senior Data Scientist and Protein Designer

What You Will Do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen leverages Generative AI in the discovery and optimization of biologics. We are seeking experienced protein designers with a deep understanding of the state-of-the-art in generative models. The ideal candidate will have experience with: (i) customizing and training novel generative models (as opposed to simply using pre-trained models), (ii) using generative models to design libraries and/or panels; (iii) interpreting the resulting wet-lab data to improve the models and/or designs.
This position can be remote or based in the US or Canada.
- Design and optimize proteins including therapeutic candidates and enzymes using AI/ML
- Pre-train, fine-tune, and apply generative and predictive models
- Work closely with laboratory scientists to advance pipeline projects
- Serve as technical lead on internal and external projects
- Mentor junior data scientists
- Take an active leadership role in guiding new technology development, infrastructure improvements, and establishing best practices

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 2 years of experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
Or
Master’s degree and 6 years of experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
Or
Associate’s degree and 10 years of experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
Or
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree in a quantitative field
- 5+ years of industry experience in quantitative analytics and applied data science
- Strong proficiency in programming
- Experience building a variety of machine learning models from complex data sets
- Excellent communicator able to write and speak about technical concepts to business, technical, and lay audiences
- Experience working with data relevant to the discovery and optimization of biologics
- Experience with traditional tools for molecular modeling and design
- Experience with cloud computing
- Experience with Git or similar version control tools
- Experience with deep learning models, especially transformers or diffusion models
- Experience leading external collaborations and partnerships

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $152,838 - $181,535.
