Methods Analytics is currently recruiting for a Data Scientist to join our team on a permanent basis. This role will include some work on client sites and frequent visits to our main offices in Sheffield and/or Bristol.

Please note due to current COVID restrictions this role will be remote working until restrictions have been lifted.

We are building a new strategy function, to further accelerate towards our goal of measurably improving society by helping people make better decisions with data. We are looking for a Central Government Lead to build and execute on a strategy that further aligns our team, data services and commercial offers to Central Government policy. You will be empowered by our multi-disciplinary delivery team of data scientists, architects, engineers and designers, and supported to market by our expanding commercial team. Building from our existing Central Government customers and working alongside peers in Health & Care, and Lifesciences, this role will be pivotal in our continued growth. Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have an analytical and problem-solving mindset with have several years of experience in data analysis, visualisation and modelling using structured and unstructured data sets. In addition to broad data skills and a deep understanding of the scientific models used, they should have a track record of impacting the business with successful data science projects.

The Data Scientist will be expected to work as part of the Methods Analytics Delivery team and will report to the Lead Data Scientist. The workload will be a blend of client assignments and internal company projects. They will be heavily involved in running analytical projects and experiments in a methodical manner and will regularly evaluate models and approaches to solutions. The ideal candidate will have a good intuition about the inner workings of statistical models and how to implement them. They avoid logical flaws in their models, doubt systems that perform too well, and take pride in preparing data correctly.
We are looking for an individual that can work independently and take initiative to develop innovative solutions while working seamlessly in a team, delivering work to a high standard and meeting deadlines. The candidate will be expected to actively share knowledge and mentor more junior members of the team. Although they will have a portfolio of responsibilities specific to their area of expertise and grade, they will be expected to develop a set of skills, competencies, and knowledge to operate effectively within their role.

Responsibilities:
  • Promote and apply data science to improve project delivery, assisting other senior members of the Data Science and Delivery team.
  • Apply an analytical mindset to ensure complex information from a range of sources is appropriately analysed and interpreted.
  • Produce high-quality, efficient code for both data preparation and analysis.
  • Research and develop statistical learning models for data analysis.
  • Formulate business problems into hypotheses for analysis, utilising innovative techniques to address these.
  • Share knowledge with other members of the team.
  • Clearly and confidently present complex analytical results in a clear and simple manner to key stakeholders, clients, and other team members.
  • Heavily contribute on development of the company knowledge base and provide feedback on new knowledge artefacts.
  • Provide efficient face-to-face, telephone, and written communications with all levels of management and clients.
Ideal Candidates will demonstrate:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or similar field, with at least 3 years of experience in data analysis, visualisation, and modelling.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Apply an analytical mindset to ensure complex information from a range of sources is appropriately analysed and interpreted.
  • Advanced knowledge of data management and pre-processing.
  • Experience with machine learning and applied statistical techniques, including error propagation and statistical tests.
  • Deep understanding of different techniques’ strengths, limitations to choose a suitable modelling approach.
  • High proficiency in using coding languages (e.g. Python) together with their data science libraries and packages.
  • Experience with version control and the use of best practices in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to create impactful visualisations, appropriate to the audience, to draw insight informing business problems.
  • Understanding of data governance principles, including security, privacy, and risk control metrics.
  • Ability to communicate results, techniques, and general issues to a technical and lay audience in a clear manner.
Desirable Skills
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented programming and development of pipelines.
  • Experience with shell scripting language and command line e.g. Bash.
  • Experience of working with deep learning and image recognition.
  • Experience of big data technologies, cloud storage, and analytics engines.
  • Experience with manual and automatic testing.
  • Experience with SQL, NoSQL, and graph databases.
  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP).
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement, technical clients, and people management.
  • Experience of the Healthcare, Defence, or Life-sciences sectors.
