About this role
The Data Scientist role sits within the Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) team of the
Evidence and Impact area at AITSL and will provide data programming, data quality and integrity
analysis and statistical analysis, for the development of reports and publications for the Australian
Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) initiative. Your work will underpin data analysis, data interpretation
and knowledge translation for the project.

The ATWD is a linkage project that has enabled a national de-identified teaching workforce database
for the analysis of supply trends and characteristics of the Australian teaching workforce. As the
ATWD is a new source of longitudinal national information it is expected that interest in the outputs
and analysis will be high. Consequently, the data analyst must be curious, motivated by and have
expertise in obtaining robust insights from data, skilled in written communication of insights and data
visualisation, and have honed stakeholder and time management skills.

What you will be doing
As the data scientist, you will:

  • Analyse longitudinal panel data to provide in depth insight into teacher
workforce trends and supply pipeline.
  • Evaluate data quality and identify opportunities for data improvement to
ensure the viability of the ATWD to address policy questions.
  • Develop new data transformations to be put into production.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the data access and reporting strategy through
the preparation of interactive visualisations, statistical output and data tables.
  • Produce high-quality documentation of your work.
  • Provide expert advice to users of the ATWD and scope data access
proposals in consultation with the Senior Lead Data Scientist and the

Principal – ATWD providing insight into their viability and feasibility, as

  • Work with the digital and reporting team to ensure knowledge translation is
accurate and appropriate for a range of audiences including Boards,
Technical Working group, senior management, states and jurisdictions,
teachers and schools.
  • Project manage your responsibilities to prioritise work flows to meet project
timelines and milestones.
  • Any other duties related to the provision of expert data analytical services to
stakeholders as directed by the manager.

What we are looking for
We are looking for a data analyst with at least 2 years’ experience working as a Data Scientist, Data
Analyst or in another data intensive role.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong Python programming skills; additional experience working with Stata
or R would be highly regarded.
  • A track record of producing data-driven policy insights in a government or
non-government context, or experience working in the education sector.
  • Expertise in statistical analysis; with experience working with models suited
to the analysis of panel and time-series data being highly regarded.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and predictive modelling.
  • A demonstrated capacity to perform data manipulation and harmonisation to
prepare data for analysis.
  • The ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
