Bord Gáis Energy is currently transforming how we store, process, and leverage data through a major agile cloud technology programme – to complement this technology strategy, we have established a brand-new Data Centre of Excellence spanning the major business units and incorporating our technology data team. The role of Data Scientist in the Data CoE requires a combination of leadership, management, reporting, statistical, technical, business, and people skills. The ideal candidate will have outstanding technical data skills, a broad knowledge of Bord Gáis Energy and the ability to lead a small team of data science graduates.


About The Role


  • Assume the role of deputy leader to the department manager (Analytics Team) and represent the team at various company meetings and workshops
  • Design, develop, update, and lead the graduate programme for data scientists – will have direct responsibility for up to 8 data graduates as part of our strategy to develop a first-class internal data capability for Bord Gáis Energy
  • Design and deliver complex analysis and reports through our enterprise self-service reporting tool - Power BI
  • Use SQL (Oracle and SQL Server) at an expert level to extract, manipulate, understand, and present ad-hoc data analyses
  • Work with the Analytics Team Manager to develop data models and insights
  • Complete peer reviews and validations of co-workers output to ensure the team always deliver work of the highest quality and accuracy
  • Display subject matter expertise in Bord Gáis Energy’s EM&D, Services, and Customer Operations business
  • Work seamlessly between our new cloud environment and the legacy on-premises databases
  • Initiate and lead strategic initiatives of the new Data CoE to ensure that end to end delivery of reports, deep-dive analyses and sophisticated data models is streamlined to maximise the new cloud data warehouse capabilities and minimise duplication of effort across the organisation
  • Communicate effectively to stakeholders the status of their requests and work with key business stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver at speed without compromising on quality


About You


  • A third level diploma in an appropriate discipline e.g., Computer Science, Business, Economics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics etc. or alternatively, significant data knowledge gained through two or more years’ experience working in high performing data teams
  • Any certifications in tools like Power BI or SSMS is preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience as a data scientist
  • An expert user of data science tools such as R, Python, Azure ML etc., Oracle SQL Developer, and Power BI
  • Expert knowledge of key data sources including billing systems such as Oracle CC&B and CRM software such as Salesforce in particular
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Azure SQL Database
  • Understands data engineering as a foundation for high quality analytics
  • Ability to participate at a high level actively in virtual cross functional reporting and business teams to deliver major analytics projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with stakeholders in EM&D, Services, and Customer Operations. Ability to lead work with business stakeholders to ensure that the reports and insights we deliver are what is required to strongly support our business tactics and strategy
  • Ability to successfully deliver major strategic business analytics requests – ability to proactively communicate and work with business stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Ability to implement data quality standards when completing reports, especially those enforceable through GDPR regulations e.g. data retention, Article 30 data processing etc
  • 2+ Years Utility/energy company experience would be an advantage
