We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our Exploration Data Science Team to develop insights on where in the world we should explore and help us discover better deposits faster. Working as part of a global team in Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX), you will enable data integration, remove silos, connect workflows and conduct general data wrangling of complex datasets.

Reporting to the Regional Exploration Data Science Lead [Australasia], working in an exciting and challenging environment, you will:

• Perform exploratory analysis of data sets to develop and refine the preliminary hypothesis
• Engineer data pipelines from source systems to predictive models
• Develop interfaces that visualize information for business users
• Provide expertise on statistical, mathematical, and machine learning concepts and conduct research, design, implement and validate cutting-edge algorithms and predictive statistical models
• Help shape the Exploration data science team, while inspiring and supporting a growing community of citizen data scientists across Rio Tinto Exploration
• Apply disciplined governance and quality assurance across projects; promote compliance with standardised processes, systems and tools
• Provide expert technical support and direction to project stakeholders, building on and sharing the lessons learnt
• Support training and development opportunities to ensure high quality expertise within the team
• Engage with clients and key stakeholders to build their understanding of data analytics and address key issues
• Disseminate results to help foster a new generation of data-driven decision makers
• Capture and record the intellectual property generated as the result of the application of analytical approaches

What you will bring

• Degree in Geosciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline combined with experience in data science projects, preferably using agile methodologies (preferred but not required)
• Proficient in Python and/or R for data processing, statistical analysis, modeling, machine learning and visualization and skilled in writing SQL querie
• Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages and packages with Python (Sci-kit Learn, numpy, pandas, Tensorflow, Keras), R, Matlab, SQL
• Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics regression, classification, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision tree, neural networks, NLP, etc.
• Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using Matplotlib, ggplot, Seaborn, Bokeh, Plotly, D3, Tableau , Shiny, Streamlit, etc.
• Cloud experience (e.g. AWS s3, AWS Sagemaker and/or Azure)
• Experience solving spatial and or geoscientific problems is preferred
• Ability to inspire, motivate and empower others to achieve their best
• Natural curiosity and passion for data science and engineering, including practical experience leveraging data science to deliver insights
