What you’ll do

The Digital Health Study Design AI Team uses techniques from machine learning, artificial intelligence, and optimisation to build tools and models to assist the design of clinical trials. The aim is to make trials better for patients, cheaper and faster to implement, and more likely to succeed. The team uses a wide range of data – including clinical trial data, real world evidence, and unstructured data – to develop solutions that will in future impact every AstraZeneca trial. These solutions might be deployed machine learning models, novel knowledge representation approaches, optimisation models, sophisticated ontologies, or knowledge graphs.

The team is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to specialize in development of innovative machine learning models, optimisation models and artificial intelligence systems to support study design. This role will work closely with partners and the team to develop novel analytic solutions for a wide variety of applications such as measuring the burden of being a patient on a trial, improving sustainability of trials, building digital representations of trial designs, or optimising aspects of the trial design. Applications should have a great foundation in at least one of machine learning, artificial intelligence, optimisation and software engineering.

Typical Accountabilities

• Provide advanced data science expertise and deliver data science solutions that drive value to AstraZeneca;
• Apply a range of data science methodologies, developing novel data science solutions where off-the-shelf methodologies do not fit;
• Translate unstructured, sophisticated business problems into the appropriate data problem, model and analytical solutions;
• Clearly and objectively communicate results, as well as their associated uncertainties and limitations;
• Work within established frameworks to deliver a variety of tasks that support projects in meeting their objectives;
• Independently keep own knowledge up to date and learn from senior team members, proposing appropriate training courses for personal development;
• Review working practices and ensures non-compliant processes are raised
• Ensure own work is compliant within Clinical Development;
• Collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment with world leading clinicians, data scientists, biological specialists, statisticians and IT professionals;
• Mentor and support the data scientists across multiple projects to drive the development of data science as an AstraZeneca capability;
• Publish in high quality journals and conferences.

Essential for the role

• A minimum of a M.Sc. degree in rigorous quantitative science (such as mathematics, computer science, engineering);
• Proven experience or post-doctoral work;
• Practical software development skills in standard data science tools: Python, Agile, Code versioning (bitbucket/git), UNIX skills, familiarity working in cloud environment (AWS preferred);
