Fixed-term contract for 24 months, 40 hours per week (See Further Particulars section for more detail).

We offer an exciting opportunity for an ambitious graduate to manage a collaborative innovation partnership between The University of Warwick and SME Capital, a FinTech company that specialises in lending to the underserved market of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

We are looking to recruit a recent graduate with a Masters or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or another quantitative subject, to undertake this 24-month project. The overall aim of this project is to apply expertise in data mining, machine learning, and data-driven modelling techniques to develop and commercialise a market leading technology product to improve the SME lending industry.

About SME Capital and The Academic Team

SME Capital: SME Capital is an established financial services provider that has maintained a strong differentiation through technology and data. SME Capital has experience building data products used by lenders & investors, and range from risk predictions (e.g., probability of default and time series forecasting) to data integration products.

The Academic Team: This is a project supported by an experienced academic team at the University of Warwick. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) will be supervised by Dr Martin Lotz and Dr Marya Bazzi, and be associated with the Mathematics Institute, one of the world’s leading research-focused Mathematics departments. The associate will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other members of staff and departments throughout the project.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

Applications are invited for a Data Scientist with a Masters degree or PhD to start as soon as possible, with the overall aim of employing expertise in data mining, machine learning, and data-driven modelling techniques to develop and commercialise market leading technology in the SME lending industry. The position is fixed-term for 24 months, but there is a possibility for the project to develop into a longer-term collaboration. With that in mind, the post will provide access to resources for professional development and training.

The post is provided within the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) framework, Europe’s leading programme helping businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base.



DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Throughout the KTP you will:
  • Work on an exciting project that combines innovative multidisciplinary research and new techniques from data science and machine learning with an impactful commercial application.
  • Be exposed to the London startup scene within a focused, experienced and motivated team.
  • Gain an invaluable experience of independently managing a high-profile project.
  • Have access to a budget of £4000 for professional development and training.
  • Be mentored and supported by academic staff and industry professionals.



The successful candidate will:
  • Liaise and collaborate with the relevant SME Capital staff and gain understanding of the commercial environment the company operates in.
  • Carry out research to identify, evaluate and solve problems relevant to the company:
  • Working with the academics to identify, study and utilise relevant literature;
  • Research solutions to a range of specific data problems;
  • Implement, test, and document algorithms for solving these problems.
  • Document research outputs and disseminate results both internally to SME Capital technology team and business stakeholders as well as externally through conference talks and publications.
  • Facilitate and actively engage with the commercialisation of the newly developed algorithms, with the goal to launch them as products:
  • Engage with potential new customers to understand market needs;
  • Iterate on the development of algorithms and supplementary technology to facilitate finding product-market fit;
  • With the support of the team, identify optimal options for route to market.
  • Manage the project independently, including running monthly project meetings, and liaising with the academic team.
  • Manage his/her own personal development plan with support from the advisors and make active use of the provided resources.
