GlaxoSmithKline is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines both individual talent and technical resources to create a platform for the delivery of strong growth in a rapidly changing healthcare market. Our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

An exciting opportunity is available in the Protein Design and Informatics group to support the development of transformative medicines through computational molecular design. Currently, one of the biggest bottlenecks in the drug discovery process, is efficient and successful protein generation The primary focus of this role will be to create and implement state of the art computational methods, data analytics workflows, and visualizations, in close collaboration with experimental partners, to enable the rapid, data-driven design of protein constructs. This will lead to shorter drug discovery cycle times and bring our medicines to patients more quickly.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Development of predictive models for protein construct design utilizing both in-house and external data sources
  • Working closely with bench scientists to identify opportunities to improve models through active learning
  • Embedding and automation of computational methods to enable multi-variant analysis of experimental data
  • Identifying and working with external academic groups to advance key computational protein engineering methods

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Computational Chemistry or Biology, Bioinformatics, Physics, or Chemistry
  • Experience in protein sequence and structural analysis, with an emphasis on protein visualization software.
  • Experience in developing predictive models, preferably in the field of protein property prediction
  • Experience in enabling decision making by developing interpretable visualizations of sequence, structure, and experimental assay data
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, Perl, Java or Ruby)
  • Competent working in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary matrix teams, displaying excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and communication skills (both written and oral), with the ability to liaise with scientists and external collaborators at all levels
  • Ability to independently review and appraise scientific literature
  • Ability to generate conclusion reports, present data in team meetings and participate in writing of abstracts and publications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with high performance computing and/or cloud computing
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms
  • Experience of working with experimental scientists
  • Training in statistics with proficiency in R
