Would you like to apply your specialist knowledge and problem-solving ability to a range of varied data sets within one of the UK’s leading Defence Companies? We currently have a vacancy for a Data Scientist at our site in Portsmouth.
As a Data Scientist, you will be undertaking original research and complex problem-solving tasks to enhance BAE’s knowledge base and capability within the field of Prognostics and Health Management in Warship Sustainment and enhance engineering performance to deliver a greater quality of service and availability to the fleet. Additionally, as part of an established capability with leadership backing to develop new ways to gain insight from data, there will also be opportunities to develop data science use cases in other business areas. Along with this you will have the opportunity to engage with academics and specialist within external technology companies and work alongside other data scientists within BAE.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work within a growing and developing team of likeminded Data Scientists, collaborating and sharing ideas across the team whilst gaining exposure across the BAE Systems Business.
Your main responsibilities as a Data Scientist will involve:
On a day to day basis use a subset of data science techniques, such as Machine Learning (including supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised learning), Data Mining, Prescriptive and Predictive Analytics to improve business capability in warship sustainment
Apply designated quantitative techniques, including statistics, time series analysis, optimization, and simulation to deploy appropriate models for analysis and prediction
Understand and use different performance and accuracy metrics for model validation in analytics projects, hypothesis testing, and information retrieval
Support development of required data analytics for organizational tasks, integrate data analytics and processing applications into organization workflow and business processes to enable agile decision making
Visualise results of data analysis, design dashboards and use storytelling methods
Analyse large and complex datasets to provide clear and actionable insights for a range of business problems.
Research and assess new data science techniques via literature reviews and engagement with academia / system subject matter experts.
Support the effective use of data within the business.
Engage with data science / analytics capabilities across BAE Systems business units
Present research and insights to stakeholders with different levels of technical understanding
Your skills and qualifications:Essential:
Background in Statistics, Data Science and Machine Learning
Knowledge of Python and R statistical tool set
Understand and ability to use Machine Learning Models
Ability to work with a range of data types and sources
A degree in a related subject or equivalent experience
Strong communication skills to communicate well within the team and with a range of Customers.
Desirable:MOD/Defence Experience
