Position Summary

The mission of San Diego State University’s Analytic Studies & Institutional Research (ASIR) is to broadly support Academic Affairs including academic colleges, Enrollment Services, Faculty Advancement & Student Success, Resource Management, and Student Affairs with information to inform decision-making. To do so, ASIR leverages available technical resources and staff expertise to ensure data integrity, develop data tools, build partnerships, promote data literacy, conduct in-depth analyses and activate predictive modeling for operational and strategic needs that support campus decision-making. ASIR is also responsible for collecting, reviewing and validating student data and faculty workload for the Enrollment Reporting System (ERS) and Academic Planning Data Base (APDB) required by the Chancellor’s Office.

The ASIR Data Scientist is a key member of the Statistical Modeling Group which supports Student Success Analytics at SDSU. In this role, the Data Scientist will plan and execute analytic projects that address campus strategic priorities outlined in ASIR’s Student Success Analytics (SSA) Plan that help inform campus leadership. The Data Scientist will apply statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and computational prowess to develop, maintain and update analyses, predictive models and other related applications or projects. This position is also responsible for summarizing findings, including reports and dashboards, and preparing slides for presentation to various venues by ASIR leadership. It also includes building front-end visualizations and data tools for the wider campus audience. The ability to translate data into actionable information is essential. This position requires strong attention to detail, deep understanding of institutional data and processes, ability to work independently, awareness and application of higher education issues and SDSU academic policies specifically. Very strong analytical, statistical, communication and technical skills are essential. Other related duties as assigned.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.


Education and Experience

Experience: Three years of progressively responsible administrative or professional experience which is applicable to the functional area in which the studies are to be conducted or which has demonstrated the ability to perform, or the potential to rapidly learn and apply complex survey techniques and analytical reporting.

OR

The rank of Associate Professor or higher in a four-year college or university; or the rank of Instructor for at least two years in a recognized college or university and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the three years of experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in Statistics or related field
  • Data mining, predictive modeling and analytics expertise
  • Experience with R, SQL, Python or another query language
  • Knowledge of Tableau visualization software and/or reporting-dashboard technology
  • Experience with educational data, student information data specifically
  • Experience in institutional research or higher education

Specialized Skills

  • High level of proficiency with statistical software such as R, SAS and SPSS.
  • This position requires experience with Excel, database tools such as SQL and reporting/visualization software such as Tableau.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills are also essential.


Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,000 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,217 - $7,630 per month.


SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
