The National Institute of Health Research Central Commissioning Facility (NIHR CCF) based at LGC Ltd ( manages a number of research funding programmes on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care with a total annual value in excess of £375 million.

The Analytics team sits within Information Services and provides analytical support to the NIHR CCF as well as external stakeholders. As a member of this team, you will be interacting with all areas of the business, providing ad-hoc and routine analytical support. Working with the other data analysts you will help to maintain existing databases and Qlikview applications and produce new applications as and when there is a business need. You will have interactions with other areas of NIHR, including helping to answer information requests, freedom of information requests, and dealing with stakeholders in the Department of Health and Social Care.

As a successful candidate you will possess great attention to detail, expert experience of MS Word and MS Excel, high quality communication skills and a background or interest in SQL, Qlikview, Alteryx, and other analytical tools.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Respond to requests for information under tight KPIs from internal and external stakeholders
  • Collate, clean and analyse research data on an annual basis.
  • Provide analytical support for quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc analyses and reports for the NIHR Research and Infrastructure.
  • Generate high quality graphs and tables to be used in reports for stakeholders.
  • Undertake any other ad hoc analyses as required.
  • Manage and maintain large, complex datasets primarily through SQL Server Management Studio
  • Managing SQL jobs and Stored procedures (building and deploying)
  • Troubleshoot database-related application performance issues as they arise
  • Managing server support and maintenance (AWS)
  • Contributing to the creation of internal dashboards (Qlikview)
  • Support the Senior Data Analyst in the development of existing and new data products and services.
  • Innovate and improve our existing SQL setup through self-driven initiatives
  • Study work methods and improve procedures to increase efficiency of data collection and analysis.
  • Assist with implementing quality assurance processes to ensure data collected and reports are of a good standard.
  • Liaise with and maintain good working relationships with internal programme teams and external stakeholder
  • Creation and review of documentation and work procedures.
  • Provide ad hoc training of transferable skills to members of analytics team

Essential qualifications and skills

  • Educated to graduate level or equivalent – preferably in Life sciences or Computer science/IT related subject
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; being able to know when to interact formally or informally.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and to prioritise a diverse workload.
  • Good organisational skills, including detailed record keeping.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, but with expert proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Committed team player with a positive attitude and an ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Some knowledge of SQL, VBA, Python or other coding language.


  • Previous experience or a strong interest in clinical research.
  • Familiar with various file-managements systems such as MS Sharepoint and Google Drive.
  • Knowledge of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Knowledge of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence/Data Visualisation software (Qlikview preferable)
  • Knowledge of cloud hosted database environments such as Amazon Web Services
