Data Scientist/Analyst – Summer Placement

Purpose of the Position:

Under the direction of the Leak Detection Manager, the Data Scientist/Analyst is responsible for the
management and successful completion of assigned projects to the standard of both Grey Owl
Engineering and our clients. Assignments are designed to further develop judgement and understanding
of professional and ethical responsibilities. Grey Owl Engineering is looking to hire someone for our leak
detection platform development who is passionate about taking data and transforming it into
information and insights that can help our clients make the right decisions.

Responsibilities and Objectives:

  • Support with research on Pipeline Leak Detection programs and improvements
  • Work within our engineering team to enhance our data analytics platform by identifying

solutions to business problems using data analytics

  • Evolve data analytics from a static model to a learning model, and not just analyzing a provided

set of data

  • Assisting in analyzing current industry trends
  • Execute analytical experiments and interpret the results to provide guidance on how to use or

enhance our data gathering

  • Identify relevant datasets to use for analytical experiments
  • Computer programming research and development on new leak detection software
  • Providing updates on project schedules, and progress reports
  • Support company health and safety initiatives and complete the training required
  • Communicate ideas for improving Grey Owl Engineering’s processes and policies with a positive

and constructive attitude


  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a recognized post-secondary Computer Science,

applied mathematics or Data Science program

  • Proficiency with data mining, mathematics, and statistical analysis
  • Programming experience (Python etc.)
  • Experience with visualization tools such as PowerBI and Tableau
  • Experience with NLP/NLU technologies (Amazon Lex, Google DialogFlow, etc)
  • Experience with AI/ML technologies (Tensorflow, Amazon Sagemaker, etc)
  • Experience with SQL
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada (position can work remotely for the duration of the


  • A practical, innovative, collaborative and solution-focused approach to issues
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, business writing, electronic communications and
