Associate Data Scientist

This is a client facing role to lead and deliver data science projects. We are looking to expand our capability to deliver robust and rigorously tested data analytic and data science based solutions across the industries Arup is active in, leveraging data platform infrastructure developed by Arup.

A key responsibility of the role includes the development of new business through collaborative working in the Arup organisation with existing and new clients. Arup are represented in a very wide range of sectors within the build environment sector including buildings, transport, energy and water related industries and we seek to exploit opportunities to deploy industry leading data science to these and other areas. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to unfamiliar business settings is essential.

The role, based in an existing team of data scientists, will also include contributing to driving innovation, setting standards and motivating adoption of best practices and developing methodologies in data science (including machine learning, computer vision, optimisation, natural language processing amongst other technologies).

Role Requirements

  • Contribute to the leadership of, and help build, an existing team of data scientists.
  • Coordinate with centrally developed data platform architectures for the delivery of data analytics and insight to our clients.
  • Business development including preparation of bids, developing client relationships and with sector leaders in Arup for external client and internally funded initiatives; developing existing and new external client relationships.
  • Liaise and coordinate with peers within Arup including our own data platform team.
  • Commitment to keeping abreast of technical development and advances in data science and related technological fields.
  • Support and guide more junior team members in developing their careers in data science in Arup and participate in Arup’s learning agenda.
  • Build collaborative and functional relationships with peers in technical, business leadership and business development roles.
  • Evangelize the impacts and values of data science solutions.

Essential skills and knowledge:

  • Proven ability to recognise client, end-user or other stakeholder needs, translate them into realisable data science propositions and lead data science teams to implement them as effective and valuable deployed applications.
  • Experience of working in a role of responsibility leading teams to deliver data analytics, data science services, including machine learning, and products, working with large scale data on distributed systems.
  • Excellent knowledge and mastery of mainstream data science technology stacks such as those available for Python.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adjust your style to suit clients and other stakeholders with varied technical or commercial agendas and knowledge.
  • Strong programming skills, including Python.
  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks including PyTorch, TensorFlow and or MXNet.
  • Solid hands-on experience in preparation of data, cleaning and transforming it for downstream data science tasks.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and deploying reusable analytical products and services.
  • Strong problem solving skills applied to client challenges and in resolving issues that arise in implementing data science pipelines. Ability to “think outside the box” in creatively solving problems with practical and pragmatic solutions.
  • Familiarity with best practice practices such as agile working approaches
  • Good familiarity with distributed, large scale data systems and database technologies including SQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Bachelor level degree in computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics or other quantitative disciplines.

Advantageous skills and experience:

  • Industry knowledge in the consulting engineering, design and construction industry.
  • Programming skills in “close to the metal” languages such Java, C or other (Julia, Scala, Haskell etc).
  • Masters level degree and/or PhD in a numerate discipline/topic
  • Familiarity with probabilistic programming languages such as Stan, PyMC3 or Pyro.
  • Familiarity with distributed computing frameworks such as Spark, Hadoop or Hive.
  • Familiarity with data governance and cybersecurity concepts in a cloud-based infrastructure context.
  • ML Ops experience.
