This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Data team lead, the Data Analyst works independently and as a part of a team, collaborating and providing support for BCCSU’s researchers. This position will require liaising closely with Data Team to take part in various projects simultaneously and across all equality categories. This position includes assisting researchers with study design, assisting with analysis and application of statistical methods; extracting information for research analysis and programming questionnaires; and assistance with project data and management systems according to ethical and privacy protocols. The majority of work is done in SAS software, an advanced knowledge of SAS is crucial for the position.

Organizational Status
The BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, help implement, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use through the collaborative development of evidence-based policies, guidelines, and standards. With the support of the Province of BC, BCCSU aims to transform substance use policies and care by translating research into education and care guidance, thereby serving all British Columbians.

Work Performed
  • Prepares reduced datasets specific to the projects (mostly in SAS).
  • Merges data and provides linkages from a variety of databases/ data sources (in SAS).
  • Develops complex (SAS) macros and scripts, datasets and reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Evaluates data quality, applications, and functions, makes changes to the output process when necessary.
  • Contributes to the development of new datasets.
  • Provides improvement in data delivery and presentation.
  • Engages with relevant staff members during the research process, advising on data structure, restriction and creation of the novel variables.
  • Monitors records in various databases, updates existing datasets.
  • Follows protocols maintaining confidentiality as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position works with a moderate degree of independence and responsibility and exercises some amount of judgement. Errors in judgment could result in serious reputational or financial consequences for the BCCSU / UBC, undermining the Centre's ability to meet commitments and achieve its strategic objectives, including the inability to successfully meet granting agencies' deliverables. Inaccurate projections and forecasts could cause the Centre to make costly decisions regarding levels of investigator and staff resources and other support. Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of BCCSU / UBC and may impact levels of research funding made available through partnerships. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility and integrity of the BCCSU and UBC.

Supervision Received
Supervised by and reporting to the senior statistician and Data Team Lead.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Computer Science, Epidemiology, Mathematics, Medical Health Information and four (4) years recent related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Relevant experience includes providing data extraction, cleaning and merging plus experience supervising and managing large complex datasets.
  • Master's degree in biostatistics or statistics is an asset
  • Demonstrated high proficiency with statistical software preferably in SAS.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with relational databases, large data sets and multiple data sources.
  • Ability to validate and audit data.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability working with information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analysing file structure, transforming raw data into finished products.
  • Ability to self-motivate, with managerial, leadership and project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of survey data and knowledge of databases such as Oracle and Redcap is desired.
  • Experience working with clinical data in research settings is an asset.
