Human Biological Samples (HBS) are fundamental to medical research in the discovery, development and implementation of new treatments and diagnostics. HBS are ethically sensitive materials and the collection, handling and access to HBS are subject to regulations, principles and ethical guidelines.

Data Analyst will have a key responsibility for the fitness and use of one or more data sets, as well as, a range of activities to protect data assets within Biosamples so that they can be used with confidence to maximize value, while legal, ethical and security aspects are safeguarded. Working within the Biosamples business users and IT, the role maintains the quality and integrity of Biosamples data through the development and embedding of standards, education of business users, review of data quality and oversight of the data correctness . The successful candidate on a daily basis, will be collecting, collating and maintaining the HBS data, so they meet quality and compliance with AZ standards. The role will cover a range of specialist knowledge areas in data standards management, data quality management, data policy, compliance & risk management.

The role will coordinate and support aspects of data projects within own specialist area, through collaboration and engagement with business users, IT, internal and external data providers. Applicants must be experienced in data governance processes and have strong knowledge and experience of data and the business processes that consume the data. Technical abilities in analysing large data sets will be a key focus.


  • Data Asset stewardship and guidelines

    • Inputs to the development of effective procedures to ensure that each data asset is governed throughout its lifetime.

    • Contributes to defining and developing data flow requirements to ensure data flows produced across the organisation are transparent, consistent, approved, stored and maintained.

    • Works with peer Data Owners and stakeholders to maintain alignment to data quality and data governance standards.

  • Creates and maintains documented standards, or appropriate sections of standards, for relevant data objects: this will include but not be limited to Biosamples data, Clinical data, and Digital data.

  • Act as SME for relevant data sets to market data champions, project teams and users

  • Provide oversight and direction for the data champions and business users to ensure standards are embedded and followed

  • Deputise for the Data Owners and organise and run some data set specific working groups, and attend other relevant working groups

  • Act as the business owner for the requirements of data quality dashboards and monitoring tools

  • Contributes to the definition of data standards, including master data, reference data and metadata.

  • Actively cleanse and improve data, in some cases reviewing data before it is loaded

  • Participate in project, process or governance forums as delegate of the data owner

  • Own and maintain the data object issue and risk registers and drive prioritisation, mitigation and resolution with the data object owner and working group

  • Assist with the development of a HBS Data Product



  • Bachelor’s degree in business, data or technology discipline – or equivalent number of years of experience.

  • Experience of Business/IT partnering for the implementation of data related solutions.

  • Basic knowledge about regulated and/or legal environment and requirements (e.g., GxP, data privacy and security)

  • Basic knowledge of standards, data management and IT management regulations, policies and principles.

  • Demonstrate high communication skills


  • Master degree in Business Administration, Information/Data Science, Informatics, computer science, economics or related discipline.

  • Applied data management and/or data science skills, including experience with related tools.

  • Experience in data ownership or stewardship

  • Programming skills
