  • Collaborate with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environments technical experts to develop and implement a range of solutions to extracting a range of diverse data.

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the Strategy and Innovation team. The role undertakes complex data analytics, interpreting the result of the analysis to provide advice and insights, inform policy and identifies trend, patterns and insights within data sets.

The Data Scientist will be responsible for delivering data and analytics projects, working closely with programmers and data analysts to deliver quality analytics and insights.

About you

Ideally you will have experience from within infrastructure, education or a planning background, with the ability to communicate data insights and apply them in planning context.

You are a team player who enjoys working in what is a collaborative, dynamic and agile team environment. You are a hands-on person who will proactively share your professional expertise and views to improve the team’s outputs. You lead by example and will proactively share your knowledge to upskill your analyst peers.


You will also have:

  • Demonstrated experience breaking down complex data problems and providing innovative solutions.
  • Subject matter expert in data analytics approaches, implementation and data visualisation techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to dissect and analyse large and multiple sources of raw data and translate it into usable information
  • Experience liaising with a wide range of stakeholders to identify and deliver on customer centred needs.
  • Experience in design, implementation and operation of database and cloud storage platforms to deliver data insights
  • Tertiary qualifications in Data Science or a relevant field

Complementary Skills:

  • Proficiency in automation of data manipulation on large datasets
  • Hands on experience with data frameworks and ETL methods
  • Competency in data visualisation and software such as Power BI, Tableau etc
  • Strong skills in SQL and Python or R preferred
  • Data engineering skills highly regarded

About our team

The Planning, Industry and Environment Cluster was formed in 2019. The Cluster drives greater levels of integration and efficiency across key areas such as long-term planning, precincts, housing, property, infrastructure priorities, open space, the environment, our natural resources – land, water, mining – energy, and growing our industries. There is a strong emphasis on regional NSW.

The Strategy and Innovation Group (S&I) is a new group in DPIE and has the mandate to develop the long-term direction of the department’s work and the road map for achieving its goals over the coming decades.

As part of its cluster-wide role, S&I:

  • Works with cluster subject experts to enable the cluster to deliver evidence-based priority strategies
  • Provides influential, trusted and relevant data analysis and insights to enable evidenced based strategies and reforms
  • Implements Smart Places programs and coordinate state-wide spatial infrastructure priorities.
