This person will contribute to epidemiologic studies of cardiovascular health among postpartum women. Studies include the examination of health-related social needs in relation to postpartum hypertension, the utilization of health services in the year postpartum, and the use of antihypertensive medications after delivery. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to: (1) perform study participant recruitment (2) contribute to the coordination and logistics underlying the operations of these studies; and (3) perform data management and statistical analyses. Other duties may involve literature reviews; managing, cleaning, and coding data; analyzing data in SAS and/or R; developing and contributing to a system of standard analytical procedures and guidance for the projects; interpreting and presenting data in tabular or graphical form; engaging in technical checks of programming; presenting results at scientific research conferences; drafting manuscripts for journal submission; and assisting with the writing of research grant proposals. As appropriate and needed, the person in this position may be involved in the following activities: managing IRB protocols, scheduling group meetings; and developing and maintain a system for tracking progress toward the study aims. This person will work alongside a team of investigators at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Public Health. Candidates should hold a MS or MPH degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related field.

Position: Research Assistant / Data Analyst

Schedule: Full Time

  • Perform study participant recruitment and consent.
  • Conduct project management, including submission of institutional review board (IRB) protocols, scheduling research team meetings, maintaining meeting agendas and minutes, developing and maintaining a system for tracking research progress.
  • Perform data management, including extraction and cleaning of raw data, derivation of new variables, labeling and formatting of derived variables, and multiple imputation. Additionally, maintain and update research databases to facilitate analyses.
  • Document processes involved in data preparation, manipulation, and statistical analyses. Develop systems for, and conduct, technical checks of analytic code.
  • Perform statistical analyses (descriptive statistics, stratification, multivariable log-binomial regression, trend analysis, trajectory models, latent class analysis) using SAS, R or Stata, and develop/contribute to a system of standard analytic procedures.
  • Prepare study results for inclusion in conference presentations, grants, and scientific publications.
  • Participate in literature reviews and contribute to manuscript writing and grant proposals as needed.


  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related field.

  • None

  • Minimum of 1 year work experience using SAS/R/Stata, Microsoft Office (including Excel), and performing data management responsibilities

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience with recruiting subjects, with an understanding of the ethical and technical conduct of research.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial and ethnic populations
  • Organizational ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and to prioritize duties.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access and PowerPoint. Experience with statistical analysis tools a plus. Ability to perform basic data management tasks (coding, data entry, data cleaning, retrieval).
  • Ability to perform basic data analysis and reporting (in words, numbers and graphics).
  • Experience using quantitative data analysis software helpful (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Minitab).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills needed to work with human subjects and patients in a hospital setting.
  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information
