In a nutshell
As Data Engineer, you will be responsible for building systems on our AWS-native Data platform to collect, manage, and convert raw data into automated usable data assets for consumption across Sainsbury’s Bank and Group. In addition, you will bring your knowledge and experience to help build up an effective Data Engineering capability and a robust Data Ops operating model.
This is a hybrid role, combine working from home, with working at one of our Store Support Centres; There will be regular team collaboration sessions at our Edinburgh site, so travel may be required.
What You Need To Do
- Champion best practices and modern data engineering methods and tools i.e. streaming and alerting.
- Contribute to the operational running of the AWS platform for BAU changes, triaging and resolving ETL/ELT and Data Pipeline issues.
- Create new / maintain existing ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines and orchestration in AWS.
- Put in place mechanisms for improving code quality, maintainability, security, and scalability of ELT/ETL and Data Pipelines.
- Collaborate and build long-lived relationships with stakeholders and key data influencers.
- Develop ‘Wiki-in-the-moment’ content and documentation.
- Contribute to the design of a data validation framework as well as the team strategy around development and deployment best practices.
- Work closely with the data product owners and assist with solving ad-hoc requests.
- Using your expertise in our cloud tooling, able to advise on solution design and provide recommendations on appropriate service usage.
- Implement and manage data development status reporting, metrics, and benchmarks.
- Work with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure data products are effectively secured and that risks are mitigated.
- Implement and oversee DataOps processes and best practices, including automating the handoff of code releases from development to operations.
What You Need To Know And Show
- A bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent professional experience.
- Excellent knowledge of Data Warehousing environments and ETL/ELT pipeline design and implementation. Commercial experience using Snowflake and/or AWS Redshift is a plus.
- Strong understanding of database design and modelling. Exposure to Data Vault 2.0 modelling methodology is a plus.
- Experience with SQL and python or other programming languages. Exposure to DBT and DBTVault is a plus.
- Experience with CI/CD and automated testing practices.
- Strong communication and consultative skills.
- Experience working in an agile, data focused environment and u nderstanding of agile data development methodologies and best practices.
- Understanding of relevant tools and platforms (e.g., AWS Cloud, database, scheduling/orchestration, data management, master data, and tooling to support DataOps), with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
