The Centre for Climate and Health Security (CCHS) is a UKHSA initiative that aims to provide scientific advice and support to local, national, and international partners on how to address the impacts of climate change on public health and embed them in system design. The CCHS has multi-disciplinary teams, scientific infrastructure, and a broad network of partners that can speak with an authoritative voice and inform the policies and organisations that are responsible for delivering them.
The Extreme Events and Health Protection (EEHP) team is part of the CCHS and focuses on the UKHSA’s national health security work for adverse weather events, including aspects of climate change adaptation and health system resilience.
The National Adaptation Programme aims to improve and integrate existing guidance to reduce the health risks associated with adverse weather events; address the health risks identified in the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment and mainstream prevention and adaptation actions within the health sector and local communities.
The Senior Data Surveillance Scientist will be responsible for analysing and interpreting surveillance data and developing automated routines and solutions. They will also handle more complex or sensitive data requests and provide guidance and support.Please note: Each pay scale has a minimum and maximum rate and the pay scales for each grade depend on the geographical location of your role (Three pay zones Inner London, Outer London, National)

Surveillance and Data Analysis
- Support the development, operation and improvement of the enhanced surveillance system to ensure a detailed long-term understanding of threats to health in region including and beyond adverse weather events
- Identify surveillance needs within given lead areas, and support developments.
- Create surveillance system specifications and develop and oversee surveillance systems.
- Respond to complex or sensitive data requests.
- Conduct complex statistical analyses of epidemiological data.
- Interpret surveillance data and make appropriate recommendations.
- Assure on the preparation, quality and delivery of routine and ad hoc surveillance reports.
- Manage/supervise scientific and information staff in the development of outputs and statistical analysis.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners.
- Oversee data requests and identify common themes or issues to be addressed.
- Develop automated routines and solutions for surveillance data reports.
- Contribute to public health scientific analyses and writing reports on specific projects, regular and ad hoc publications and peer reviewed publications
- Present, communicate and disseminate epidemiological products effectively, appropriately and with high impact using the most appropriate medium to visualise data to tell compelling and actionable stories relevant for business goals.
- To develop statistical models on the impact of adverse weather on health and assess the impact of interventions.
- To develop methods to make better use of data to inform models and to take advantage of increases in the volume and richness of data sets
- Project manage epidemiological research studies.
- Advise on information governance aspects of research such as data sharing and ethical approval
- Analyse datasets with appropriate methodology to answer research questions
- Perform systematic review of literature
- Support a grant proposal, and apply for ethical approval
- Present at scientific conferences, programme area meetings and other fora
- Publish and present scientific papers on public health surveillance and adverse weather in collaboration with health, public health, academic and other partners

Person specificationEssential Criteria
- First degree (relevant subject) or demonstrable equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area (in the maintenance, analysis of data)
- Knowledge / experience in data management and epidemiology for adverse weather incidents
- Knowledge of principles and practice of surveillance, including data management, data transmission, data security, data quality, data analysis and interpretation including descriptive statistics and graphics and data reporting
- Experience of overseeing and ensuring the successful delivery of projects relating to information systems and management and the ability and skills to develop automated routines, reports and solutions as required
- Experience in utilising Power BI
- Ability to apply a range of common statistical tests and algorithms including time trend analysis and an understanding of exceedance.
- Proficient in the use of some of the following: spreadsheets, databases, GIS, statistical software. Experience of maintaining code using R or an alternative statistical package.
- Higher qualification in Epidemiology, information science, public health or allied discipline or equivalent level of experience/education
- Experience of research activities including statistical analyses & peer reviewed publication
- Knowledge and experience of common statistical tests and modelling, including time trend analysis, survival analysis, regression, logistic regression, and perform multivariable analysis
- Awareness of relevant adverse weather data and information flows in the Met office
- Microsoft Office 365 essentials certification
