Job Summary

The Senior Data Scientist provides technical expertise and leadership in conducting research for the Data Science Institute (DSI). With limited oversight and under the direction of the DSI Scientific Director, the Senior Data Scientist is responsible for establishing and managing the research direction of the team, supervising DSI data scientists, undergraduate and/or co-op students, and providing technical expertise and advice to members and partners of the DSI. The position involves conducting complex and integrated data analyses on large, integrated datasets, developing processes which guide the management and use of data, and writing publications for peer-review journals. In addition, the Senior Data Scientist also leads the technical aspect of the implementation and delivery of educational programs to empower trainees and professionals within and outside of UBC.

Organizational Status

The Data Science Institute (DSI) is a research institute under the Faculty of Science whose mission is to incubate research projects that will promote data science research and development, leverage data science to advance research, and to identify and develop research harmonies among researchers. Working across the University's data science community and advanced computing teams, the DSI focuses on building interdisciplinary research teams tackling data-rich problems, specializing in diverse application domains such as healthcare analytics, data-centric manufacturing, housing analysis, and many others. The vision for the DSI is to help match researchers in possession of a lot of data, but without the knowledge of how to use the data to advance the research, with computational scientists who develop data science methods and solutions. Our intent is to make researchers more successful in acquiring team grants or connecting with industrial sponsors. The DSI also has a secondary goal of providing training in data-intensive sciences and developing non-credit educational programming to empower application domains.

This grant-funded position reports directly to the DSI Scientific Director and works closely with the DSI Research Administrator. The position will interact with researchers across UBC and in external organizations.
