About The Job

Job summary

As this is a developmental role, you will be supported in your progression to a Data Engineer role (with a base salary of £35,744 per annum, plus the possibility of a recruitment and retention allowance of up to £10,000 per annum), this is expected to take six months to eighteen months depending on performance.

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is a world leading hydrographic agency that has been helping people safely navigate the oceans for over 200 years. We are looking to grow our data engineering team to build our data services and productionise analytics.

As a Junior Data Engineer you will play an important part in the above. You will work on projects that will be central to realising the UKHO vision – building systems that deliver data to analysts, customers, and products in the correct form via automated, production grade pipelines that apply leading edge technologies such as deep learning, distributed computing and serverless cloud architectures.

Hybrid Working Expectations

The team are flexible where they work with some members coming into the office more than others. There are no fixed days in the office.

Job Description

  • Working with colleagues to deliver high quality code
  • Writing automated tests to ensure compliance with requirements
  • Contributing to the scrum ceremonies such as daily stand-up and planning meetings
  • Utilising serverless cloud capabilities delivered using CI/CD pipelines

Sift/Shortlist Criteria:

Experience :

  • Has written software that reads and/or processes data (lead criteria)
  • Has used data storage tools such as databases or structured file formats
  • Has experience of working as part of a team, preferable utilising scrum methodologies
  • Has knowledge or experience of cloud technologies such as AWS/Azure/GCP

Technical scenario

As part of the interview process you will be given a technical exercise which we will assess against the following criteria.

Experience of data pipelines, including:

  • Designing and writing data processing software
  • Accessing and reading data
  • Testing software
  • Cloud development knowledge

Depending on the number of applicants we receive, we may run a technical interview as a stage 1 assessment, with candidates only progressing to a stage 2 interview if they pass the technical interview.

Onboarding Checks:

In the event you are offered a role with us, you will be required to go through Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks which will include Employment and Right to Work Checks. Residency Requirements

SC – non reserved: This is a Ministry of Defence non-reserved post and although open to UK, British Commonwealth and European Economic Area nationals, successful applicants will require a security clearance (SC) and therefore need to have resided in the UK for a minimum of 12 consecutive months within the last 5 years
