The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Blend to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. We are looking for a Staff Engineer with significant expertise in Data Engineering to join the Personalization team, a collection of teams that is redefining Spotify’s capability to be a leader in the audio experiences space. We’re doing this by building a playlist ecosystem that benefits listeners, creators and Spotify.

We're looking for someone to help evolve our technical vision for the playlist ecosystem and help own the adoption of our platform. Specifically someone who can significantly contribute to the goals of creators and contribute directly to some of the company’s top strategic priorities. This role will also consider multidisciplinary implications of our data architecture across many subject areas such as, backend, machine learning, and front end technologies.

As one of the most senior individual contributors in the product area, we expect a technical leader that can impact multiple smaller teams, assume leadership of projects and champion architectural excellence. You'll grow the capabilities of the team by championing strong engineering practices, facilitating technical strategies and roadmaps, regularly assessing the health of teams’ technology in the data community!

What You'll Do

  • Drive the evolution of our architecture and help to lead the implementation of this evolution.
  • Coordinate technical projects across teams within Spotify.
  • Influence, coach and mentor other Data Engineers. Be a leader, making your team a continuously better version of itself.
  • Facilitate collaboration with other engineers to solve interesting and challenging problems.
  • Collaborate with key internal team members building batch and real-time data pipelines with data processing frameworks like Scio, Storm, Spark and the Google Cloud Platform.
  • Be a technical leader and valued contributor in an autonomous, multi-functional agile team.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, product owners, and designers to identify and solve challenging problems, creating exciting music sessions for users worldwide.
  • Be a leader of the Spotify-wide data community affecting and driving our architecture across the company.
  • Work on what you want during regular hack days and annual hack weeks.

Who You Are

  • You are the experienced leader that team members go to for help leveling-up their skills in data engineering and more.
  • You have experience working directly with stakeholders to understand, document and develop systems to meet their requirements, driving increased adoption and reducing reliance on custom one-off implementations.
  • You have an interest in machine learning technologies.
  • You have worked with large-scale and high-volume heterogeneous data using distributed systems.
  • You have used high-level JVM-based processing frameworks such as Apache Beam, Dataflow, Crunch, Scalding, Storm, Spark, or similar - but not just Pig/Hive/BigQuery SQL-like abstractions.
  • You believe data is the most powerful tool for informed decision-making.
  • You love working in an environment where you constantly experiment and iterate quickly.
  • You have used message broker services (pub-sub pattern) such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, AWS SQS, Google PubSub or similar.
  • You understand data modeling, data access, and data storage, caching, replication, and optimization techniques.
  • You are comfortable with distributed teams and asynchronous communication.

  • We are a distributed workforce enabling our band members to find a work mode that is best for them!
  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas or European regions in which we have a work location and is within working hours.
  • Working hours? We operate between the Eastern and Central European time zones for collaboration.
