The Princess Máxima Center is Europe’s largest and fully dedicated childhood cancer center. Our mission is to provide a cure and optimal quality of life for every child with cancer. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.

The Van Boxtel group is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated bioinformatician, to support the research in our team.

The Van Boxtel Group
We are a preclinical research group with 20 members of different disciplines, such as genomics, bioinformatics, stem cell biology and pediatric oncology. Our aims are to understand how cancer can arise in children and how cancer treatment causes adverse effects in cancer survivors. In our team, we value collegiality, reliability, creativity, enthusiasm and dedication, which allow us to successfully reach our goals, and to create a stimulating work atmosphere.

Our research
Why do certain individuals develop cancer and others don’t? And why do children get cancer? Our vision is that by studying mutation accumulation in stem cells, we will obtain novel insight into the etiology of cancer. We think this knowledge is crucial to improve cancer diagnostics and treatment, as well as for developing strategies aimed at preventing cancer. To achieve this, we combine innovative stem cell culture technologies with genome sequencing and in-depth mutational analysis. We focus on studying life-long mutation accumulation in human tissues at the single cell level as well as mimicking mutational cancer signatures in vitro. We have 3 research themes in our lab:

  • Tissue-specific mutation accumulation in human stem cells
  • Tracking the origin of cancer
  • The etiology of therapy-related malignancies in cancer survivor

Tasks and responsibilities
The candidate will provide bioinformatics support to the ongoing research projects of our PhD-students and Postdocs. Also, the candidate will be responsible for embedding our research within the bioinformatics core of the Princess Máxima Center.

Specific tasks include:

  • Genomics and in-depth mutational analyses, including mutational signature analyses, integration of multiple genomics data layers and phylogenetic analysis of human tissues
  • Data management and stewardship
  • Software admin
  • Group’s contact person for Big Data Core and IT research department

  • You minimally have a BSc or MSc degree
  • You have advanced skills as a bioinformatician or data scientist
  • You have a high level of proficiency in R and Python
  • You are a team player who is eager to facilitate multidisciplinary research
  • You have a high intrinsic motivation and interest in genomics research
