The Van Boxtel Group
We are a preclinical research group with 20 members of different disciplines, such as genomics, bioinformatics, stem cell biology and pediatric oncology. Our aims are to understand how cancer can arise in children and how cancer treatment causes adverse effects in cancer survivors. In our team, we value collegiality, reliability, creativity, enthusiasm and dedication, which allow us to successfully reach our goals, and to create a stimulating work atmosphere.
Why do certain individuals develop cancer and others don’t? And why do children get cancer? Our vision is that by studying mutation accumulation in stem cells, we will obtain novel insight into the etiology of cancer. We think this knowledge is crucial to improve cancer diagnostics and treatment, as well as for developing strategies aimed at preventing cancer. To achieve this, we combine innovative stem cell culture technologies with genome sequencing and in-depth mutational analysis. We focus on studying life-long mutation accumulation in human tissues at the single cell level as well as mimicking mutational cancer signatures in vitro. We have 3 research themes in our lab:
