We are seeking an experienced Staff level Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team and work in a fast-paced environment. Ideal candidates must be enthused about writing SQL and Python, solving complex data problems, good data modeling, as well as designing automated data pipeline strategies that withstand the test of time. They must be an experienced mentor, a proven leader, self-starting, and have the ability to guide a team in maintaining and building within a horizontal and vertical scaling data warehouse. The role will require extensive hands-on experience with handling data, demonstrated understanding and experience with solving complex data problems, as well as provisioning data pipelines and reports.
You'll need to demonstrate first-rate attention to detail, and the ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure. You'll need to be comfortable in developing ideas to solve problems, then executing on those ideas though deployment. In addition to the needed technical skills, the engineer will need strong verbal and communication skills, as well as mature technical writing skills to influence decisions of our team, data leadership, executives, and many other areas of the business..
Able to lead in technical strategy of data pipelines, ensuring the team builds reliable, maintainable, testable, code that is efficient at scale
Able to lead the design of data models for optimal storage and retrieval by defining standards to enable meeting business needs and service level agreements for the long term
Identify broad technical problems, translate them into specific projects and tasks for the team to work through
Seek to introduce new patterns or technologies, adapted for SoFi's use cases to effectively solve complex problems where needed.
Contribute to company data governance by internalizing company data policies, and drive implementation of processes and guidelines for data engineers to follow.
Evangelize and lead the team in good team best practices, seek to amend and train where needed
Designs new technical components and architecture for the team to leverage
Assist the team in translating product requirements into projects, as well as activities, and tasks
Assist the team in generating ideas for new initiatives
Owns delivery and execution of team initiatives by navigating priority, removing barriers, and ensuring needs are met.
Mentor other engineers inside and outside out team
Support the data culture and contribute to the shared tooling and standards of data engineers at the company
Seek to improve productivity and data quality
Communicate with executive management project leads, product managers, software developers, and data consumers
Create well written technical documents which include diverse viewpoints, advises management and directors on technical tradeoffs, and ultimately makes good recommendations
Influence cross functional teams to help drive SoFi's data ecosystem
Develop scalable data models where complex data relationships exist
Architect and maintain highly automated and scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines
Provision, optimize, and maintain data feeds to external systems
Write code to validate data quality and clean existing data
Be part of an on call support rotation to support the Data Warehouse and it's automated processes
Troubleshoot and solve data inconsistency issues
Identify inefficiencies, optimize processes and data flows, as well as make recommendations for improvements
Create visualization and reporting as needed
Demonstrate true ownership to the well being of the data warehouse and its processes
What You'll Need
Bachelor's degree in a technical field and 8+ years working experience working with automated scripting, data modeling, and data architecture
Solid working knowledge of relational database platforms and cloud database platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, or GCP
Strong in Python and/or another data centric language
Experience in AWS or other cloud data environments
Experience scaling data architecture
Understanding of the software development lifecycle process
Skills and experience in finding, investigating, and resolving data quality issues
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and prioritize a workload
Ability to bring new ideas and promote process improvement
Strong business communication skills that can break down technical problems into business language for non-technical personnel
Nice to Have:
Experience using business intelligence reporting tools (Tableau, Looker, etc.)
Experience in docker
Experience using kafka
Experience integrating external data sources via API
