About the Department

SSE Enterprise comprises three companies: Contracting, Telecoms and Distributed Energy. Distributed Energy offers a full range of services which contribute to the development of smart cities and smart places, in both public and private sectors. We finance, own, operate and maintain a broad portfolio, from electrical vehicle (EV) infrastructure, to distributed energy systems including renewable and low-carbon generation, energy storage and heat networks as well as building owning and adopting private HV networks. We’re also proud to be at the forefront of using technology to help enable a low-carbon world. This involves providing customers with energy optimisation solutions through intelligent systems and offering platforms and connectivity to enable smart energy infrastructure and demand management services.

What is the role?

This is an opportunity for an experienced and talented Data Scientist to join our expanding Digital team in this exciting hands-on Data Science role, working closely on some of the most demanding, high-profile data science problems in today's energy industry. You'll build innovative proof of concepts for complex industrial problems across Distributed Energy with a focus on Smart Buildings and Energy Systems.

As part of a growing team of Data Scientists, you'll be working in a small agile team applying state-of-the-art techniques from data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence and decision optimization as well as building advanced data visualizations. We’re building an advanced cloud analytics platform and utilise a variety of data sources ranging from IOT sensor data, geospatial, weather, lidar, fault and predictive maintenance.

What do I need?

We need you to have a passion for Data Science and AI combined with the ability to communicate insights to the business and senior executives to help build winning business strategies. You'll already have some experience applying data science / machine learning / AI to solve business problems, ideally within the energy or engineering sector, and this will be based on a Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline, plus a MSc or PhD in a related subject such as Data Science or Artificial Intelligence, or equivalent knowledge developed through training or professional experience.

Evidence of your continued development through online courses, meetups or equivalent is also highly desirable.

Technically, you'll bring good experience in the majority of the following: Machine learning (Supervised, Unsupervised, scikit-learn); Deep Learning (Tensorflow/Keras); Python (Pandas, Numpy, PySpark, Jupyter); Git; Tableau or equivalent; SQL; Artificial Intelligence/cognitive services.

It would be an advantage if you also have knowledge and experience of: Automated descriptive analytics; Geospatial data science / visualization; Azure, AWS or similar cloud; Azure ML Services or similar PAAS ML; Anomaly detection; GIS; Diagnostics; NoSQL; Graph database; decision augmentation/automation e.g. Heuristic Optimization/ Reinforcement Learning; optimization/planning/scheduling; Apache Spark.

Intellectually curious, you'll also demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences. We’re looking for a collaborative team player, with a professional and positive attitude who will be able to play a key part in providing Data Science skills to support our Distributed Energy strategy.
