Technical Lead Data Engineer

We are seeking a Technical Lead Data Engineer to join our Device Interaction Engineering Department at our World Headquarters in Olathe, KS. In this role, you will architect complex data models. Drive evaluation and adoption of new Big Data technologies. Leads team discussions and plans, and contributes innovative suggestions within area of discipline.


  • Leads feature development plans and authors concept documents
  • Understands production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Exemplifies Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture
  • Configure and administer data servers and Hadoop components
  • Develop scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies in an evolving operational framework
  • Authors technical requirements and alternatives to accomplish project.
  • Leads team in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle to contribute technical expertise and to identify issues
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor to team members.
  • Participate in and help guide research POCs, including design, coding, and performance and efficacy measurement.
  • Provide 24x7 on call support
  • Partners with team lead to define team roadmap and priorities.
  • Develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Sales and Marketing
  • Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions
  • Leads major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines
  • Applies technical expertise and analysis to initiatives
  • Contributes input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
  • Recognized as an expert in assigned discipline at Garmin and applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to initiatives
  • Contributes input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
  • Serves as a leader of change
  • Demonstrates professional maturity through giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Conflict is addressed effectively without appreciable oversight
  • Capable of leading multi-squad projects across Engineering disciplines

  • Perform other duties as necessary


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another relevant field AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience
  • Outstanding academics with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge
  • Advanced experience using Hadoop and various components
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization


  • Superior academics
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
  • JAVA Experience or experience high level object oriented programming
