Drax Group is a renewable energy company engaged in renewable power generation, the production of sustainable biomass and the sale of renewable electricity to businesses. We a leading producer of wood pellets from sustainable low-value commercial forestry residues.

Drax Group has implemented Data and Integration Hubs across Drax Group. This involves Data Lakes, Data Warehouses, a series of Extract/Transform/Load (ETL) technologies, and data from a variety of internal and external sources with the aim to enable the Data & Data Science teams to have data sources easily accessible at their fingertips to utilize in building analytical and statistical models to further the knowledge base of Drax Group with enterprise-grade Data Science projects.

As a part of this Hub, we are hiring a Senior Data Engineer. This could be your next best move.

So, what will you be doing?

You will work with the group Data Science and BI and Reporting teams:
  • to understand their requirements for short-term and long-term ingestion of various data sources and deliver these in line with the Drax IT strategy, data model, and enterprise data architecture;
  • to design, build and implement data and machine learning pipelines for exploratory projects and models in production with a high degree of automation;
  • to transform prototypes into end-to-end data solutions using software engineering best practices to identify and refine further high value opportunities to improve group and business unit processes, to continuously strengthen data and data science in Drax

Key Accountabilities Include:
  • Building databases, data lakes and data ingestion pipelines to deliver the datasets for projects
  • Designing, developing and deploying end-to-end solutions for data and data science models to be used in production, including by non-data science users, using best practices from engineering and data science
  • Develop and maintain scalable data and machine learning solutions during data development lifecycle and support the code and infrastructure for databases, data pipelines, metadata and code management
  • Engage and coordinate with stakeholders across Drax of various levels of seniority to ensure buy-in to and delivery on data objectives including with (but not limited to) data platforms and architecture, development and operational teams, data security and privacy as well as 3rd parties
  • Keep up-to-date on new technologies and relevant developments in the data, data science and machine learning engineering space to improve the existing data foundations infrastructure
  • Further the knowledge of data engineering across the data science teams and the wider community through regular participation in knowledge shares, best practice and coaching activities
  • Comply with up to date data security, data privacy (GDPR) and information data governance rules

You posses the Following Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in building production-ready data engineering solutions, implementing and maintaining scalable data structures to deliver BI and/or data science projects to end users
  • Working knowledge of Python, SQL, Spark, Databricks, ETL tools
  • Experience working with large volumes of data (e.g. for industrial IoT, sensor data etc.)
  • Experience with AWS/Azure technology (e.g. S3, Redshift, Athena, Glue, Lambda, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lakes, Azure Functions etc..)
  • Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to break down complex problems to convey information to stakeholders of different levels of pre-existing knowledge, including to C-level and external parties, such as vendors and suppliers
  • Working knowledge of UNIX / Linux command line, source control and scripting
  • Good knowledge of NoSQL databases (e.g. HBase, Cassandra, MongoDB)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and data analysis, data modelling experience
  • Motivation to learn about new technologies relevant to data science and data engineering, keen team player enjoying data lifecycles on variety of projects
  • Some experience using Databricks and/or other ETL tools
  • Some experience with Microsoft Azure and/or AWS
  • Some experience in Solution Architecture, Data Warehousing, Cloud Engineering, Data Modelling or Data Science
  • Knowledge of energy industry (e.g. energy trading, utilities, power systems etc.)
