Tesco Mobile is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) and joint venture between O2 (Telefonica UK) and Tesco. Launched in 2003 we have grown rapidly to become the UK's largest MVNO with over 5m customers. We have a unique position in the market as we benefit from the powerful combination of Tesco’s leading retail estate and massive customer base and O2’s network with 99% UK population coverage. We’ve now been a Which? Recommended Provider for 9 years running. The Data & Analytics team lies at the heart of the business with responsibility for Data Platforms, Business Intelligence/Analytics, and Data Science. These three areas work closely together to meet requirements from all directorates of the business.
The Data Science Team focuses on modelling complex business problems and deploying data products at scale both internally and externally across multiple areas including physical stores, online, supply chain, finance, and marketing. We encourage rotation amongst our Data Scientists so they can gain expertise in different subjects.
This is a hands-on position where you will need to leverage your analytical mindset to find solutions to complex problems e.g. customer acquisition strategies, optimising sales channels and campaigns, improved stock management, better marketing effectiveness, maximising customer lifetime value and reducing customer churn.
On any day you could be supporting the automation of decision-making across the business; optimising processes for key business objectives; or conducting deep-dive exploratory analysis to inform strategic decision-making.
You will be responsible for
As a Data Scientist, you will have the following responsibilities:
Understand difficult business problems and prototype solutions with minimal support.
Apply, modify and design algorithms and mathematical models to solve business problems on top of big data architectures (Spark).
Validate, document and present the modelling process and model performance.
Communicate complex solutions in a clear, understandable way to non-experts.
Promote data science across Tesco Mobile and promote Tesco Mobile within Tesco and across the external Data Science community.
You will need
We are looking for ambitious individuals with a mix of statistics, programming and machine learning skills. The role requires that you have an extensive background in machine learning and data mining. A track record in modifying and designing advanced algorithms and applying them to large data sets is essential. The requirements:
A scientific mentality with the ability to ask the right questions, as well as answer them
A strong numerical higher degree in a mathematical, scientific, engineering or computer science discipline
Solid understanding of mathematics and statistical principles
Experience in one or more of the following fields: predictive modelling, operational research, deep learning and time series modelling
Strong programming experience, Python preferred
Strong communication skills
Demonstrable end-to-end project experience with a track record of being able to spot opportunities and drive them through to delivery
Ability to work independently from the Data Science Manager finding your own solutions to problems
Ability to quickly gain knowledge of Tesco Mobile and understand the business. Previous experience of the telecoms industry would be a significant advantage
Ability to work simultaneously across several analytical projects, managing your own time and projects to deliver results with minimal support
Being an active team member, sharing knowledge and best proactive, and mentoring other members of the team
