Who we are & why we're hiring

Twilio powers real-time business communications and data solutions that help companies and developers worldwide build better applications and customer experiences.

Although we're headquartered in San Francisco, we're on a journey to becoming a globally antiracist company that supports diversity, equity & inclusion wherever we do business. We employ thousands of Twilions worldwide, and we're looking for more builders, creators, and visionaries to help fuel our growth momentum.

About the job

This position is needed to design, build, and deploy machine learning systems into the real world and help Twilio power the next-generation communications platform. You are eager to learn and inspire, and you like to think at scale and work in real world products and problems.

Responsibilities

In this role, you'll:

  • RUTHLESSLY PRIORITIZE: Work with other engineering teams and with members of the product organisation to distill internal and customer needs into requirements and tech specs.
  • DRAW THE OWL: Build new features without having all of the answers.
  • BE AN OWNER: Architect new systems with a focus on scalability, testability, and maintainability.
  • WEAR THE CUSTOMER'S SHOES: Help resolve technical issues and blockers for internal and external customers.
  • DON'T SETTLE: Drive high engineering standards on the team through code review, automated testing, and mentoring. We care what our code looks like, and you should too.
  • EMPOWER OTHERS: Collaborate with colleagues on a small, energetic team.

Qualifications

Not all applicants will have skills that match a job description exactly. Twilio values diverse experiences in other industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having desired qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to also apply. If your career is just starting or hasn't followed a traditional path, don't let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

Required:

  • Strong background in the foundations of machine learning - familiarity or exposure to NLP, conversational systems, knowledge bases and/or search
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with one of Python, C/C++ or Java/Scala
  • Strong fundamentals in systems design and engineering

Desired:

  • A Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or another quantitative discipline or equivalent experience
  • Exposure to containerization and microservice architectures
  • Interest in the latest NLP-related algorithms and methods such as sequence-to-sequence models, contextual word and sentence embeddings, attention, etc.

Location

This role will be in any of our European locations or offices.

Approximately 5% travel is anticipated.

What We Offer

There are many benefits to working at Twilio, including, in addition to competitive pay, things like generous time-off, ample parental and wellness leave, healthcare, a retirement savings program, and much more. Offerings vary by location.
