Rover

Data Scientist (based in Barcelona)

Job description

Who we are:
Want to make an impact? Join our pack and come work (and play!) with us.

We believe everyone deserves the unconditional love of a pet—and at Rover, our mission is to make it easier to experience that love. Founded in 2011, the Rover app and website connect dog and cat parents with loving pet sitters and dog walkers in neighborhoods across the US, Canada, and Europe. We empower our community of trusted pet sitters and dog walkers to run their own pet care businesses on Rover with the tools and security of a global company to back them.

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, we work closely with our teams in Barcelona, London, San Antonio, Spokane and remote locations. We’ve got a reputation for being a great place to work, having been named among the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Seattle Business Magazine and Washington’s Best Workplaces in the Puget Sound Business Journal. We're an agile, fast-growing company, and our leadership comes from some of the world's most respected tech companies.

At Rover, our furry coworkers are just as important as our human ones—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Along with making the joys of pet parenthood more accessible, we’re committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community of pet people—and that starts with our employees.

Now, we are on a mission to bring Rover.com and the benefits we spread amongst pet lovers to Europe and beyond! Therefore, we are looking for a talented and driven Data Scientist in Barcelona to support our global teams in Europe and the USA.

What does data science mean at Rover?

At Rover we obsess over our customers’ needs, relying heavily on data to improve the customer journey and continuously optimise outcomes in our marketplaces. We understand that behind every data point there is a pet and a person. When we develop initiatives, we understand that we are altering the customer experience and impacting the business in measurable ways.

As a Data Scientist at Rover you will:

    • Build multivariate models to arrive at inferences or predict future behavior
    • Develop algorithms that match owners with providers, such as in search or recommendations, or solve other customer needs
    • Deploy machine learning models at scale, writing production code in collaboration with machine learning platform engineers
    • Design and analyze A/B user tests and marketplace experiments, often in partnership with product managers
    • Offer technical guidance to business stakeholders co-located in Europe

Your Qualifications

    • B.S in a quantitative discipline required; advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred
    • Background in data-informed decision-making, with strong analytical and problem solving abilities

    • Working knowledge of statistics (e.g. how to interpret and determine statistical significance for A/B tests, conditional probability)
    • Intermediate SQL skills (e.g. you would be comfortable leading a SQL 101 course for analysts), or can learn.

Why we'll hire you

    • You’re an analytical thinker who is passionate about using data to drive real value to the end user (and thus the business)
    • You are passionate about our core business. You will instinctively dig into every aspect of what it means to be a pet sitter and a pet owner on the Rover platform
    • You favor open communication with willingness to ask and answer questions
    • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to break apart complex analyses for non-technical stakeholders
    • You can take abstractly defined problems and work with (imperfect) data to drive decisions
    • You play nicely with others (and dogs)

Benefits of working at Rover.com

    • Competitive compensation
    • Permanent contract
    • Stock options
    • Private health insurance
    • Discounted Gym Membership
    • Bring your dog to work (and unlimited puppy time)
    • Monetary help for adopting a dog plus yearly credit to use on our platform
    • Flexible work hours, sometimes you’ll need to be in at certain times, but on the whole, we’re pretty flexible when it comes to managing workload and time
    • Grab snacks, fresh fruit, in our kitchen to keep yourself going!
    • Free Tuesday breakfast and every other Thursday free company lunch (currently on hold due to COVID-19)
    • Regular team activities, including happy hours, game nights, and more (Remotely due to COVID-19)
