The Government Technology Agency (GovTech) aims to transform the delivery of Government digital services by taking an outside-in view, putting citizens and businesses at the heart of everything we do. We also develop the Smart Nation infrastructure and applications and facilitate collaboration with citizens and businesses to co-develop technologies.
Join us as we support Singapore’s vision of building a Smart Nation - a nation of possibilities empowered through info-communications technology and related engineering.
Who We Are
The mission of GovTech's Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Division (DSAID) is to uplift our government’s data science and AI capabilities for public good. We use technology and data to deliver high-quality digital services to public agencies, businesses and citizens in Singapore. The Central Stack & Innovation team within DSAID is a lean engineering team that builds innovative DSAI products and microservices that we serve out to our own division, the wider GovTech, and/or other agencies.
Outcome Driven – Our projects are not academic exercises. We are driven by the “so what”, and seek to ensure that our findings and models can translate into tangible impact.
Start Small and Move Fast - We build things fast. If it works, we quickly move on to the question of how we can scale it further. If it doesn’t work, what went wrong and what can we do better next time?
Ownership – You’re not just here to write code. Team members help to figure out what we should be building, and how we should build.
Continuous Learning – Working on new ideas often means not fully understanding what you are working on. Taking time to learn new architectures, frameworks, technologies, and even languages are not just encouraged, but essential.
In this Together - We draw from the deep domain knowledge of our partners and apply best practices from our community of experts.
What The Role Is
Data scientists in GovTech help crack challenging problems through the use of machine learning and other computational methods on government data. In this particular role, you will be part of a team working on innovative projects that require a broad range of Data Science & AI techniques to solve. Some of the immediate projects are in the field of natural language processing, which include improving search results, and implementing solutions that utilise LLMs to better serve public officers.
As a data scientist in the team, you will:
- Research deep into the problem statement and propose solutions to tackle it
- Work closely with product managers, data scientists and engineers to develop, test and deploy new data products
- Write production-quality code and work with engineers to put models into operation
- Learn new things and impart knowledge to other team members in a multi-disciplinary team
Additionally, more senior data scientists will be expected to:
- Establish best practices
- Share your expertise and mentor other data scientists
- Help with recruiting.
What It Is Like Working Here
Through the products and microservices that we build, the goal is always to achieve a multiplier effect for the division, enhance GovTech’s products in the use of data and AI, empowering public officers and benefitting the public. At any point in time, you may be doing one or more of the following:
- Engaging users to understand their problems
- Conducting research & experimentation
- Rapid Prototyping
- Productionising your code
- Continuous Learning
- Sharing your knowledge and mentoring others
- Propose new innovation projects
What we are looking for:
We work mostly in Python, JavaScript and AWS serverless technologies. We build our own tools, libraries, models and APIs from time to time, but also buy and assemble the best-in-class solutions from the industry to solve our problems.
We are looking for people who:
- Have experience working with data and machine learning to solve problems, particularly in natural language processing techniques and experience in Large language models / transformers.
- Have experience with OpenAI’s GPT-3, ChatGPT or related technologies
- Have a demonstrated ability to build software
- Can write code to solve abstract problems
- Can talk and reason about code with other engineers
- Take the initiative to make things happen and want to work for the public good.
