Position Overview

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Machine Learning Engineer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Providing technical support for ongoing research projects. This includes supporting in the data analysis, visualization and interpretation for trainees and staff
  • Developing, adapting, and distributing cutting-edge BCI software tools and applications
  • Provide quality assurance and maintenance of software systems in the BCI4Kids lab
  • Refine and adapt existing BCI applications to incorporate cutting-edge machine learning and data analysis techniques
  • Collaborate and work closely with the clinical staff and trainees to understand their project and application requirements
  • Creating quality code through writing unit tests and automation
  • Conceptualize and implement solutions for standardized data recording, analysis, and storage
  • Configure the backend usability of all front side applications
  • Supporting technical infrastructure and maintenance
  • Assisting with day-to-day operations of the BCI program
  • Collaborating with other members of the BCI team and broader networks, including individuals with different and diverse backgrounds
  • Integrating with institutional, provincial, national, and international networks with shared interests
  • Maintaining excellent project management and meeting internal deadlines
  • Responding to patient-defined goals to rapidly develop testable prototypes

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Electrical or Software Engineering, Mathematics, or related areas
  • PhD an asset
  • Minimum 7 year’s experience working as a data scientist, machine learning engineer, software engineer or related position (graduate studies acceptable alternative)
  • Experience with software engineering process development, establishing best practices and continual improvement
  • Demonstratable portfolio of applied machine learning or data science projects
  • Continual improvement mindset when it comes to engineering process development
  • Strong technical background to understand the complexities and work of the team
  • Significant experience with neurotech industry standard programming languages – Python, C++/C#, JavaScript, Rust, etc
  • Significant experience with multiple scientific programming languages and software packages such as R, MATLAB, Simulink, SPSS, etc
  • Significant experience in implementing and applying machine learning techniques to real-world applications, products or programs
  • Significant experience with acquiring, processing, and analyzing EEG, EMG, or other bio-signals
  • Experience in developing software applications using game engines (Unity, Unreal, Godot, etc.)
  • Experience working in a team software development environment
  • Experience in agile development processes and test-driven development
  • Experience with test automation and continuous integration
  • Terminal degree (i.e. PhD.) in Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Science or related areas
  • Experience in app development for tablets, phones and web-browsers (Swift, React, Kotlin, etc.)
  • Familiarity with brain-computer interface (BCI) systems
  • Familiarity with translating research to clinical or commercial products
  • Basic understanding of human neurophysiology
