Biomarker Reverse Translation Data Scientist

Job description

In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organisation (pRED) , we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

You will be part of the Early Biomarker Development Oncology (EBDO) department of Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) Oncology. The EBDO team consists of biomarker experts and scientists supporting drug development by designing and implementing precision medicine strategies aiming at selecting the right molecule for the right patient and enhancing our understanding of disease biology. Together, we form a team striving to augment and accelerate translation of preclinical and clinical findings into innovative biomarker strategies to provide proof of mechanism and patient stratification and/or selection options. Built on a diversity of skills and expertise such as immunologists, molecular biologists, pathologists, imaging scientists and biomarker experts, EBDO promotes pRED Oncology vision to develop curative medicines for cancer patients.

Job mission

As an Oncology Biomarker Reverse Translation Data Scientist, you will be embedded into EBDO to enable and support reverse translational research of multiple biomarker data types and generate insights. You will also be part of an internal network of clinical scientists and data scientists enabling cross-learnings, methodology sharing and improvement, and insight sharing.

Your mission will be to analyze and interpret biomarker data to support reverse translation (e.g. characterize tumour heterogeneity, identify resistance mechanisms to cancer therapies, drive scientific innovation, etc.).

Your impact

Here is a glimpse into some responsibilities and activities:

  • Analysis and interpretation of multi-omics data sets, including high-dimensional single cells data, retrieval and analysis of such biomarker data from Roche and external repositories, providing fit for purpose analytical and statistical methods

  • Coordinate several reverse translation projects in a matrix environment: collaborate with colleagues from different teams and with different expertise (clinical, biomarker, data science, etc.), define scientific questions and deliverables, prioritize activities and tasks, report data and insights, proactively manage and mitigate risks/delays, help define the optimal resources/skills allocations (including internal and external resources)

  • Hypothesis generation by combining multimodal from completed and ongoing clinical trials

  • Create composite patient profiles by multimodal biomarker analyses to enable patient enrichment and disease classification

  • Development and application of statistical methods and mathematical models building integrated multimodal statistical framework for interpretation and predictive usage of heterogeneous patient-derived data. Integrate pharmacology, pharmacodynamics and other biomarker datasets using state-of-the-art data computer programming approaches enabling quantitative analysis

  • Develop and manage data analytics solutions, provide new capabilities and services to enable decision-making and insight generation

  • Quickly recognize and mitigate data quality problems

  • Translate business needs into functional and technical requirements for data management, reporting and visualization activities

  • Openly share perspectives and insights and collaborate within cross-functional teams to develop solutions, gain alignment and deliver impactful business insights

  • Be at the forefront of methods development and actively evaluate their potential and possible contribution to EBDO goals

  • Improve data-savviness in the EBDO community

Your profile

You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You are looking for a company where you receive the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Working in a multicultural environment motivates you. As a fast learner, you actively drive the quality of the requirements.

If you have these qualifications and skills, we look forward to receiving your application:

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. immunology, molecular biology, cancer genetics, tumour biology, molecular oncology, signalling) with 2-5 years of postdoctoral experience

  • Experienced in reverse translation in the field of Cancer Immunotherapy

  • Trained in data science, computer science, biostatistics or related discipline

  • Good understanding of Immunology and/or Cancer Biology is mandatory for this role

  • Experience in high dimensional single-cell data (CyTOF, scRNAseq) and/or in spatial transcriptomics and proteomics is a plus

  • Experience with handling/analyzing clinical biomarker data

  • Experience in working in a multidisciplinary and clinical development environment is a plus

  • Proficient in one or more programming languages (R, Python, Matlab, C++ and/or SAS)

  • Passionate about data science and drug development

  • Good communicator that can engage with senior leadership and communicate data science activities and achievements

  • While executing scientific rigour you are effective and focused with high organizational skills

  • High capabilities to efficiently work in a matrix team environment, analyzing different viewpoints and pro-actively propose constructive solutions
