You will lead in the delivery of several key strategic initiatives to optimise claims triaging and processing at Hastings Direct. With the goal of becoming market leaders in this space, the successful candidate will spearhead the development of capability to deploy machine learning (ML) algorithms in a real-time environment to drive routing decisions at first notification of loss (FNoL) and various other points throughout the lifecycle of a claim.

This role is within a combined team of Actuaries and Data Scientists championing the widespread adoption of ML techniques in general insurance to drive tangible commercial outcomes.

About the role

  • Gather detailed business requirements relating to key strategic initiatives from commercial stakeholders
  • Develop and deploy highly predictive ML models to optimise claims triaging and processing
  • Engage with stakeholders across the organisation to coordinate project activities and meet deadlines
  • Mentor a junior data scientist and contribute to establishing a Data Science Community of Practice within the organisation

About you

  • Strong technical modelling skills
  • Proven track record of delivering commercial value
  • Keen interest in emerging ML techniques and how these can be used within Underwriting & Pricing
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Strong senior stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Actuaries
  • Natural problem solver who loves building quality solutions to complex real-world challenges
  • Focuses on the bigger picture but not afraid to get into the detail when necessary
  • Dynamic, flexible and delivery-focussed work ethic required to adapt to a fast-paced environment
