THE POSITION
We are part of the Discovery Research area within our Innovation Unit (IU). Through the use of In Silico methods combined with disease biology we want to identify novel human disease insights. Our main goal is to accelerate and improve decision making in order to identify impactful first-in-class therapies for our patients. We aim to transform our Innovation Unit through cutting edge digital sciences.
Embedded in our growing Global Computational Biology and Digital Sciences Unit our ambition is to shape the future drug portfolio by acting on novel biological insights generated from the application of state-of-the-art in silico methods to human disease data.
To achieve this, we are building a data science group that can unleash the transformational value of healthcare data, biomarkers and advanced analytics. With the ultimate goal to transform how we discover and develop new medicines at Boehringer Ingelheim.

Tasks & Responsibilities
- As a Data Scientist / Engineer, you will implement technical solutions to execute our data-driven innovation strategy ensuring long-term value of external BioBank data assets according to FAIR principles.
- You will be able to understand high-level molecular biology / healthcare requirements and implement technical solutions to turn these requirements into PoCs and productive solutions.
- You will create, integrate and implement data pipelines which lay the foundation of a scalable data architecture.
- Whilst building cross-functional linking and alignment of data concepts, vocabularies, and taxonomies you will ensure a seamless connection of data from different domains and heterogenous sources.
- By coordinating and leading domain-specific data engineering activities, you will ensure adherence to overarching data governance guidelines and principles (e.g. alignment of terminologies).
- In addition to the tasks above, you will manage and facilitate access to relevant data with internal groups.
Requirements
- PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computational Biology, Data Science, or a related field with relevant expertise in the healthcare industry
- Experience and understanding of data integration, ETL data pipelining, implementing data architecture processes and management concepts such as semantic data integration, data modelling & FAIR principles
- Demonstrated experience in all phases of software engineering such as testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery paired with solid programming skills in e.g. Python, R and/or Java
- Experience with Containerization technologies such as Docker and, NextFlow and cloud development such as AWS
- Excellent communication, moderation and intercultural skills as well as the ability to convince an audience of a desired strategy
