Job description

IMC Locums are looking for a Data Scientist for a fixed term 18 Month Contract in the Midlands

The Data Scientist will be responsible for the analysis of large PCR sample data sets resulting from patient testing processes, and the identification and escalation of any anomalous results. The role-holder will require strong analytical thinking and attention to detail, to guarantee processes are carried out according to the lab’s Standard Operating Procedures. The Data Scientist will also analyse non-clinical data as part of process optimisation and escalate any quality control issues relating to reagent performance

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the accurate analysis of large PCR sample data following patient testing processes
  • Identify patterns and trends in the data sets, for both internal processes and clinical aspects, raising any anomalous or invalid results to the appropriate team
  • Ensure the correct tracking and recording of the data analysis in the LIMS database to maintain accurate records and audit trails
  • Maintain quality standards, ensuring processes are carried out according to the lab’s Standard Operating Procedures, and escalating any risk or issues to the Quality Manager
  • Analyse non-clinical data as part of process optimisation and escalate any quality control issues relating to reagent performance to the Quality Manager
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities to enhance the procedures, systems and principles through data science, and support the testing and introduction of any new methodologies
  • Manage projects relating to ad hoc data requests, for example, tracking average patient sample turnaround times
Key Outputs and Deliverables:
  • Accurate analysis of large sample data sets, resulting in correct Covid-19 and genomic sequencing patient sample reporting
  • Support achievement of agreed KPI’s on sample throughput, quality and health & safety
  • Accurate tracking and recording of the data analysis in the appropriate LIMS database
  • Quality assurance, ensuring processes are carried out according to the lab’s Standard Operating Procedures
  • Process optimisation and continual improvements through Non-clinical data analysis
Key Stakeholder Relationships:
  • Support teams including Logistics, Quality and LIMs
  • Lab staff including Principal Scientists, Associate Principal Scientists and Shift Managers
  • Deputy ePCR Directors

Skill and Capability Requirements:

Essential:

  • BSc Life Sciences / Computer Science
  • Extensive experience using databases and data analysis tools
  • Experience using R analytics / Python
  • Significant experience processing large scientific data sets accurately
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tests, ideally PCR or genomic sequencing
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Exceptional organisation skills and attention to detail
  • Inquisitive and strong evidence of using initiative to identify areas of continuous improvement
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Desirable:

  • Experience working with PCR or genomic sequencing datasets
  • Experience working within a lab environment
  • Experience of data visualisation and mining
  • Strong project planning and management skills
  • Experience using laboratory information management system (LIMS)
