We bring together data and knowledge from consumer, markets, science and technology, and translate those into insights to accelerate DSM’s innovations.

The Challenge
As a data engineer, you shape the data infrastructure and data workflows for the research data that we continuously generate in-house and in partnership with universities and research institutes, and you help us gain valuable insights from them. We perform nutritional studies in humans and farm animals in-house and with external research institutes, but we also generate a lot of data with our products in our own laboratories, e.g., in chemistry, formulation, application, biotechnology, analytics, …

  • Develop, improve and maintain data infrastructure, databases and data workflows for a wide variety of data, e.g., farm animal studies, next generation sequencing, analytical chemistry, metabolomics, human clinical trials, sensor data, …
  • Help to align data workflows across the different departments, competences, and technologies to facilitate correlation and connection of data
  • Propose pragmatic solutions based on cost/benefit, organizational and practical considerations, with a view to adding value within reasonable timeframes
  • Interact with data scientists, bioinformaticians, data managers, statisticians, life scientists and project managers to help them gain relevant insights from our data
  • Interfaces for data import/export, design GUIs, dashboards
  • Responsible for data specification and recommendations
  • Develop, maintain, and administer databases, data infrastructure, and data workflows across the organization
  • Promote awareness regarding data integrity, quality, consistency, access, and security
  • Make recommendations for software, hardware, and data storage upgrades together with IT

  • Bsc or MSc in computer science, informatics, bioinformatics, or related field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in applying data engineering in a business or science setting
  • Experience in applying FAIR data management, data engineering, data mining, data visualization, machine learning, artificial intelligence
  • Experience with data engineering, analytics and visualization tools (e.g., Python, R, PowerBI, Spotfire and Java) as well as modern database technologies (SQL and NoSQL databases).
  • Workflow languages: WDL, CWL, NetFlow, or other workflow language
  • Familiarity with data cloud applications and infrastructure (AWS, MS Azure)
  • Docker, (potentially also Kubernetes), to maintain and organize
  • GitHub, Confluence, Atlassian
  • ETL: extract, transform, load, in collaboration with data scientists
  • Ontologies and semantic data formats (e.g., RDF, Gremlin, SPARQL, …)
  • Strong communication and explanatory skills towards non-experts and stakeholders, able to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams
  • Experience with requirement analysis with stakeholders across several departments

  • Efficient at documentation of systems, data structures and processes
  • Curiosity how you can add value to the business with the data infrastructure
  • Well organized, pragmatic and proactive problem-solver
  • Able to handle priorities across multiple stakeholders in different departments
  • Fluent in written and spoken English. Additional language skills would be an advantage.
  • Optional additional experiences
  • Familiarity with pharma clinical data standards such as CDISC would be welcome
  • Experience in working with agile teams is an advantage
  • Any familiarity with life science, pharma, clinical studies, nutrition, next generation sequencing, or analytical chemistry is an asset

  • Location: Europe, ideally in Kaiseraugst/Switzerland near Basel or Delft/Netherlands, but working from home in these or other countries could be negotiable
  • Percentage: 80-100%, with flexible working hours
