All About The Role

As a Data Engineer in the Customer pillar, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the machine learning solutions that delight millions of customers using our apps worldwide. You will work closely with data scientists and machine learning engineers to design and build data pipelines on our data platform to support ML models in our customer-facing apps.

You will help drive better restaurant recommendations, more accurate delivery estimates, operational improvements, and other improved experiences for our customers.

Your direct team-mates will be Data Scientists and ML Engineers and you will build close working relationships with ML Engineers, Data Engineers, Product and Tech Managers across the wider business.

This is not a pure data engineering role. There will be elements of ML and Analytics engineering too. This doesn’t mean you need to know everything, but it does mean you need a drive and enthusiasm to learn. These are some of the key ingredients to the role:

• Build reliable, testable and scalable data pipelines that allow our data scientists to bring ML models to production quickly and responsibly.
• Identify business and technical requirements to help define a robust data extraction & transformation process, collaborating with data science, product, and other technical teams.
• Develop data workflow monitoring and alerting solutions that provide diagnostic & actionable information to stakeholders.
• Ensure delivery of high-quality data engineering solutions and following best practices for development, testing, and deployment.
• Utilise agile software development principles practices to facilitate a bigger data science impact.
• Work cross-functionally with Data Engineering, ML Engineering, and DevOps to resolve issues and standardise practices.
• Independently dig into data issues, find the source of the problem and identify the solutions.

What will you bring to the table?

• 2+ years of engineering experience building and maintaining data pipelines - preferably in machine learning-related projects using both Python and SQL,
• Excellent SQL skills (preferably with BigQuery) and experience navigating complex big data lakes and warehouses (particularly on Google Cloud Platform). Able to write complex but efficient queries without supervision.
• Solid knowledge of Python for data engineering and ML applications.
• Experience with cloud data storage (e.g. GCS/S3) and workflow management tools commonly used for ML (e.g. Airflow/Kubeflow).
• Experience applying data validation practices and standards (e.g. data testing, quality monitoring, etc)
• Forensic attention to detail and passionate about maintaining a high standard when it comes to source code, data quality, documentation, system design and production systems.
• Understanding of approaches to developing, releasing, and maintaining reliable, secure, and scalable big data or machine learning solutions.
• Knowledge of software engineering best practices across the product development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, pair programming, build processes, testing, operations, and CI/CD.
