Job description

At Blue Yonder, we employ state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to generate hundreds of millions of micro-decisions for large retail enterprises every day. Full automation allows us to shape supply chains and set selling prices such that customers never face empty shelves, less groceries go to waste, and fashion stores no longer end up with heaps of surplus clothes at the end of season.

Our retail products run on the Blue Yonder platform that provides all necessary services to deliver best decisions to our customers. Our platform defines standard APIs for customer payload data exchange and offers the computational punch for our data scientists, scaling from a single CPU to hundreds of cores and terabytes of RAM within seconds. All this happens for all customers on the same shared infrastructure hosted on Microsoft Azure.

As one of a few companies world-wide, we have solved the tough problem of bringing data science to production while keeping costs and operational efforts at bay. We continue to relentlessly drive innovation to pursue our vision of the autonomous supply chain. On the way, we have solved, and will solve plenty of interesting and challenging problems, and we would love to have you on board for that journey.

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our Karlsruhe/Bracknell (Germany/UK) based team. Preferably you will be within commuting distance of the office so that post-pandemic you can benefit from personal interaction with the team, but for experienced candidates we are open to remote working.

The Role:

  • You will be joining a newly formed cross-functional team of data-scientists and machine learning engineers, with the objective to validate and prototype new ML-based solutions in the retail space.

  • Successful topics within the team will pass through the following phases: initial Proof of Concept, Pilot, and roll-out to Production. You will need to be pragmatic and enjoy tackling the different challenges that these phases present.

  • We will move fast, but not at the expense of quality. Clean software development principles will be followed in all phases of development. You should be enthusiastic about shaping and evolving the development workflow of the team, and be a keen adopter of technologies that automate away collaboration pain points.

  • We will be tackling complex problems that are statistical in nature. You should be enthusiastic about applied statistics and modern technologies used to model real-world data.

  • We will do research and experimentation, but always with a focus to translate it into value for our customers. For substantial periods the team will be focusing on maturing successful prototypes, during which research topics will not be a significant part of the role. Time is however always allocated for development of personally motivated side-projects.

Relevant Experience:

  • Extensive use of scientific python libraries for data manipulation and modelling: numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, seaborn, etc.

  • Has been part of a team that creates and maintains a substantial codebase that has an active group of users. e.g. ‘users’ may be customers who depend on the output of a productive system you support, or people who directly use the tools you have produced.

  • Has participated in projects with direct customer interaction. This role will provide opportunities for all team members to interact directly with the customers that we develop solutions with.

  • Has worked on a product for which Machine-Learning methods are a central component. i.e. have productionised ML.

  • Has worked with large data sources (bigger than you can load on your laptop) using highly parallelised computing methods. e.g. Hadoop, Spark, Dask, etc.

  • Has worked in and/or built a DevOps culture.

Are you excited about the opportunity, but afraid to apply because you are not checking all boxes above? Please don't be shy. We will do our best to hire for potential rather than your current qualifications.

We live for pushing artificial intelligence forward and scalable solutions. Joining our team means you can look forward to working with our people on realizing creative ideas and see how they operate in the resulting solutions. Mutual respect, friendly relationships and results-oriented work are an important part of our environment. We strive to be a family-friendly business and are open to modern working structures. We enjoy delivering the highest-quality work and like clean coding just as much as our social barbecues, contributing to open source projects, discussing new technologies and spending quality time with our families at home.

We believe that the individuality and diversity of our employees make a decisive contribution to our success. Our hiring process is based qualifications on and career profile. We welcome applications from all motivated candidates, regardless of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, origin or religion.
