Seasalt

Data Engineer

Job description

Seasalt is a modern Cornish company with an ambitious vision. As a successful omnichannel retailer spanning over 70 shops, 400 wholesale stockists and online, we're always challenging ourselves to think creatively and innovate. We have an opportunity for an experienced D&A professional to join us within our multi-disciplinary D&A Delivery Teams at an exciting time as we continue to grow and develop our data strategy.

Working within our multi-disciplinary D&A Delivery Teams (“Crews”) in collaboration with the business and Data & Analytics colleagues you develop and construct data products and services and integrate them into systems and business processes. You support the design and implementation of data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence systems.

You will join our team as we are moving from an on-premises SQL Server data warehouse to Microsoft Azure and a more modern data platform. If you already have experience of the Azure tool set that’s great but if you don’t and have a solid understanding of data engineering we’re willing to invest in your development to learn the new skills required.

Please note this role can be based remotely within the UK, with occasional travel to our Cornwall head offices.

You’ll help us by:

  • Communicating between technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Providing data profiling and source system analysis, presenting insights to colleagues to support the end use of data
  • Designing, building and testing data products and data integration services, including the data warehouse
  • Translating and integrating business requirements into the analytics architecture by working closely with Data & Analytics colleagues and the business
  • Developing ETL scripts and routines to facilitate movement of data across the business’ full analytics architecture. Designing and implementing ETL procedures for intake of data from both internal and external sources, ensuring data exceptions/rejections are identified
  • Delivering appropriate technologies to deliver resilient, scalable and future-proofed data solutions, following guidance on good practice analytics architecture development and design
  • Producing and updating data models, applying industry recognised patterns and standards
  • Working with metadata repositories
  • Responding to and resolving problems in databases, data processes, data products and services as they occur
  • Creating and maintaining appropriate levels of documentation to enable knowledge share and future support of products created
  • Testing outputs and products to the appropriate quality level and where possible create automated, repeatable tests
  • Working with other data teams to understand our standards and best practice guidelines and provide inputs to enable their continuous improvement
  • Defining and using agreed standards and tools to design, code, test, correct and document simple and medium level programs and scripts
  • Providing end user support and training for the data products that your team creates
  • Continuously developing yourself and your team
  • Being able to work out of hours when required to suit the needs of the business

The skills you’ll be sharing with the team:

With experience in data analysis, modelling, engineering and development processes, you’ll have a track record of designing, developing and implementing Data Warehouse solutions using SQL, SSAS and SSIS. Previous time spent developing and maintaining SQL Server database code and ETL is a given, as is knowledge of self-serve BI tools.

A logical thinker with an eye for detail, you’ll have excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills. You will have awareness of agile techniques and metadata management. You’ll be a flexible and proactive person, able to organise own work and work with end users to identify solutions to identify solutions and optimise processes.

Experience in development with cloud hosted data/integration architectures on Microsoft Azure, including Synapse Analytics, Data Lake, Azure Data Factory/Synapse Pipelines, Tabular SSAS, Power BI datasets is desirable but not essential.
