Data Scientist (Research Data Analytics Manager)

Job description

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is recruiting for a Data Scientist (Research Data Analytics Manager).

This position will join a newly-funded NIH Consortium, Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) Methods and Analysis for Populations of Diverse Ancestry.” A large volume of data is available as part of this NIH project. Optimizing the integration of large-scale, harmonized genomic and phenotype data to facilitate collaborative analysis, dissemination of PRS-related data, and development of related methods and resources, are integral components of this project.

The Data Scientist will be responsible for conducting independent data processing, analyses, modelling, requesting, extracting, and combining data from multiple platforms. The data scientist/data analyst will work under minimal supervision of faculty genetic epidemiologists and will also work with data scientists and statisticians across the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and PRS Consortium.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise analysts that use research data and statistical methods to provide insight into business performance.
  • Assist in development of recommendations for methods of improving business operations. Implements analytical approaches and methodologies and assists in the interpretation of results. Manages the collection and analysis of data and identify benchmarks for comparison purposes. Presents reports to management for use in decision making and strategic planning.
  • Uses subject matter and technical expertise to identify and define research questions and data elements, and integrates them into research design. Leads the planning stages of research and introduces new statistical methodologies and research designs.
  • Develop, recommend, modify, and implement policies and procedures and/or methods for research. Leads the development and formulates best practices and protocols in data collection, data quality, warehousing, analysis, and reporting including developing special forms and/or formats for analyzing and presenting data.
  • Conducts data analysis using macro- and micro- data for research operations and administration. Lead problem solving sessions on various data research efforts. Frames appropriate and achievable research objectives.
  • Manage the execution of development and implementation of research based on available data and areas of interest; develop work plans and manage to deadlines. Leads and supports efforts to strengthen research operations and administration within the unit including developing and refining protocols and establishing strategic partnerships.
  • Develop and maintain quality control systems and ongoing reviews of processes and practices based on analysis of process and procedures. Provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Manage data repository and reporting, including development of scoping requests, review of data requirements, and validation of data through user testing.
  • Delivers data and analytics in a reporting format which can be understood by all levels. Prepares ad hoc and standard reports for external reporting. Mentors less experienced members of the research team, develops training, and provides continued guidance.
  • Independently cleans, validates, and analyzes research data in order to prepare research findings for publications of journal articles and grant proposals. Searches relevant literature, develops conclusions, writes reports, prepare and deliver presentations of relevant findings and conclusions, and recommends appropriate actions. Reviews analysis and reports of less experience members of the research team.
  • Perform sophisticated data searches and exchanges among micro, mini, and mainframe-based statistical software applications. Establish and maintain database files, perform required data extraction through programming and reports on progress of programs, studies, and/or projects.
  • Determine specifications of database(s). Develop and maintain databases and data systems necessary for analysis and reporting. Develop and design procedures for databases and ensure standardization of design is maintained.
  • Analyzes large data sets to identify patterns and clearly communicate key research trends. Researches and evaluates data and trends, then forecasts any changing conditions. Defines, validates, and implements analytics and responds to data accuracy and logic in reports.
  • Designs suitable methodologies to deliver to the agreed upon objectives and provide actionable insights. Draft and review written research reports and other outputs. Creates and tailors presentations to various internal and external audiences.
  • Identify and partner with key stakeholders to define research priorities and develop plans that can support these priorities.
  • Manage key data analytics and data warehousing staff, ensuring constant improvement in their professional skills, guiding in the execution of their duties upon request, and essentially readying them for taking up his position in the future.
  • Foster and support a consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research area.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Public Administration, Information Management, Social Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Science, or in a field of study related to the research. Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Sociology, Public Policy, Public Administration, or field of study related to research preferred.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience involving research data analysis with at least three (3) years of relevant research specialization. Experience in the use and application of SAS, STATA, and/or R is preferred.

One (1) year of experience coordinating the work of others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cloud technologies such as AWS or Google cloud.
  • Undertake preprocessing of structured and unstructured data
  • Proficient with programming for data analysis, ideally Python or R.
  • Experience in data mining.
  • Build predictive models and machine-learning algorithms.
  • Present information using data visualization techniques.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.

Hiring Range: Approximately $78,000 - $85,000, commensurate with education and experience.
