A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DATA SCIENTIST / SYSTEMS ENGINEER / DOD
As a Data Scientist / Systems Engineer, you help federal agencies be interoperable so that they can exchange, search, discover, and manage data seamlessly. Corporately, you contribute to a small dynamic team that is focused on novel customer solutions. You help to both improve existing and develop new GEOINT data standards. You work with customers to understand their requirements and develop solutions for various data standards such as data models, ontologies, taxonomies, and vocabularies. This may involve research, analysis, or discussions with subject matter experts across the agency.
You also get to present team solutions before a review board for approval. Then you help implement approved changes to data standards and publish respective updates. This involves several steps, including: analyzing the changes as a whole and deconflicting if needed, implementing the changes into MS Access databases, and running process steps involving SQL, VBA, and Java-based tools. You also perform data mappings and other data harmonization activities as needed. You serve as a technical resource for the development, profiling, and application of GEOINT data standards.
You perform logical and physical data modeling to develop enterprise and domain data architectures. This includes semantic and syntactic integration and mapping of multiple data sources to arrive at a common data-centric architecture. You analyze data requirements, map legacy data stores and formats, and perform architectural alignments. Though you have an analytical mind and often work independently, your good interpersonal and communication skills are also essential to your success. You enjoy the excitement of being on the front lines of solving difficult national security problems.
