How do you
make our customers happy?

Bol.com is changing retail to make daily life simpler for 12 million customers. A mission we take on with 45,000 partners that enrich our retail tech platform with customer-centric propositions. Combined, we offer 33 million articles and achieve peak sales of 700 orders per minute (Black Friday 2020). As those numbers demonstrate, we’re an extremely data-rich organization. But how do we leverage all that data to maximize customer value?

The biggest challenge

Every year, we process millions of customer questions by phone, e-mail, chat and other channels. This feedback provides us with millions of opportunities to put a smile on someone’s face. But how can we use this data to genuinely understand our customers and piece together the big picture? Can you apply the potential of data science to improve our service? Our customers eagerly await your algorithms!

Your responsibilities
as Machine Learning Engineer @ Customer Happiness DataLab

Understanding customers is key to providing the best possible service. Acquiring that knowledge, however, is a multifaceted challenge. To start with, we need to collate data from different channels. Hot topics can (and by definition do) change erratically. Customer questions and messages aren’t always as clear as you’d like them to be, and so forth. Then we need to design algorithms that extract meaningful information from this ocean of data: information that provides stakeholders with insights they can use to optimize customer value. Finally, these algorithms must be made production-ready, deployed and monitored to potentially serve millions of requests per day.

As Machine Learning Engineer @ Customer Service DataLab, you are a team player and innovator who knows the ins and outs of creating, deploying and maintaining ML solutions, but also isn’t afraid of proposing out-of-the-box solutions. By brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of your team members, Data Analyst and Scientists, you set out to understand how stakeholders’ needs can be converted into a Data Science solution. Your deep knowledge of SQL, Bash, Natural Language Processing, Machine & Deep Learning as well as (best-practice) Python, testing and CI/CD enables you to go all the way: from a prototype in a Jupyter Notebook to a fully-fledged ML service in production. This role calls for strong problem-solving skills and a model-agnostic approach: getting the job done comes first, fancy tooling second. Nevertheless, you are a fierce proponent of high-quality coding standards and know how to establish these.

As a Machine Learning Engineer you carry two hearts: Software Engineer and Data Scientist. This means that you are ready to go from a first DS prototype to production, but you are also happy with supporting fellow Data Scientists lifting their prototypes from a Jupyter Notebook to a production-ready state or making sure that our ETL pipelines are up-to-date. As Machine Learning Engineer @ Customer Happiness DataLab you are part of an interdisciplinary team and work with colleagues from different realms within the company. This requires you to keep an open mind and approach problems from different angles. As our environment is constantly changing, we expect our MLEs to be eager to continuously learn and develop their skills.

This is a senior role, which means that you are not only an engineer, but you also find great pleasure in helping your team define processes and tooling, coach others and help Data Science succeed in the fleet. You are a resilient and persistent personality that is not easily discouraged by obstacles. When things aren’t in place yet, you create them. When you see an opportunity to help Data Science make impact, you go for it. You love to develop tech, but you are also a strategic thinker that enjoys developing the craft of Data Science in the team.

3 reasons
why this is(n’t) for you
Yes, if you have years of experience in Machine Learning (preferably Natural Language Processing), but if a simple SQL query does the job, that's what you go for!
Yes, if you love the process of lifting a prototype to production by making use of your solid software engineering skills
Yes, because you always have an eye on the business value of a project and work with a goal-oriented approach
No, if you'd rather show off your skills with the latest tools than use the best tools for the job
No, if you prefer to hand over a prototype and start the next one instead of taking it to production
No, if you just want to code but not think about processes, tooling and strategy
