Pacific Life is looking to invest in bright, agile new talent to ensure we continue to innovate and strengthen relationships with our policyholders. It’s in this spirit that we are currently looking to add a skilled Advanced Analytics Consultant to our team in Newport Beach, CA.

As a Senior Data Scientist you’ll play a key role in Pacific Life’s growth and long-term success by leading advanced analytics projects in Pacific Life’s life division (LID) in line with PL’s digital first and data driven insights and decision-making strategy. You’ll interface with key stakeholders, including product, distribution, underwriting, valuation/experience analysis, marketing, operations, finance and IT, to drive the analytics projects needed to gain insights into the business and identify drivers of performance.

What You’ll Do

Create advanced data models and high-quality analysis for all aspects of our business to discover insights, drive outcomes, actionable recommendations and innovation to guide strategic decisions

Establish and promote a clear and transparent framework for developing, testing, and scaling actionable insights resulting in measurable business impact

Partner with key stakeholders to champion an insights-driven culture for the entire division; partner with data science and infrastructure peers and operational managers throughout PL to identify data gaps, improve data quality, and share advanced modeling techniques and learnings

Build, develop and maintain data models, reporting systems, data automation systems, dashboards and performance metrics that support and inform key business decisions

Oversee the design and delivery of reports and insights that analyze business functions and key operations and performance metrics

Manage and optimize processes for data intake, validation, mining and engineering as well as modeling, visualization and communication deliverables

Examine, interpret and report results of analytical initiatives to stakeholders in leadership, technology, distribution, marketing, operations, underwriting, finance, and product teams

Oversee the data/report requests process: tracking requests submitted, prioritization, approval, etc.; develop and implement quality controls and departmental standards to ensure quality standards, organizational expectations, and regulatory requirements

Communicate results and business impacts of insight initiatives to stakeholders within and outside of the Division

Tech & Tools You’ll Use

Machine learning/cloud-based libraries (TensorFlow, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, Kraken, Theano, NumPy, SciPy), statistical packages (SQL, R, Python, SAS), Alteryx and Data Robot, Data visualization tools such as Tableau, C++, Java a plus, Big data tools (Teradata, Aster, Hadoop, Spark), Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint

Factors for Success

10+ years’ experience with data science and advanced analytics with proven record for delivery of data-driven insights to inform strategic decision making; PhD (preferred) or MS in advanced analytics or quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Math or Engineering, or equivalent industry experience; FSA a plus

Solid business acumen to put analytics in the appropriate context while identifying key metrics that measure and drive long term growth

Expert in data mining and pre-processing principles and collecting data from multiple data systems, classification, mapping, and structuring/staging

Demonstrated familiarity with machine/deep learning algorithms and techniques to support primarily supervised and reinforcement learning such as association rule learning, Bayesian networks, clustering, decision tree learning, gradient boosting, genetic algorithms, learning classifier systems, and support vector machines

Experience and knowledge of statistical modeling techniques: GLM multiple regression, logistic regression, log-linear regression, variable selection, etc.

Experience with machine learning/cloud-based libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, Kraken, Theano, NumPy, SciPy), programming languages and statistical packages such as SQL, R, Python, SAS (code statements, models and macros), tools such as Alteryx and Data Robot, and data visualization tools such as Tableau. Knowledge of C++ and Java a plus

Experience with big data tools such as Teradata, Aster, Hadoop, Spark, etc.; deep understanding of and experience using analytical concepts and statistical techniques: hypothesis development, designing tests/experiments, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and developing actionable recommendations for business units

Strong ability to plan and manage numerous processes, people and projects simultaneously

Excellent communication, collaboration and delegation skills with demonstrated ability with both technical and non-technical stakeholders; proven presentation skills, executive presence, and managerial courage to speak at all levels within the organization
